I'm trying to find a new motherboard for my dad's business computer. What's the best micro ATX I can get that has an AGP slot and supports an intel 478 socket proc?

Those are becoming a rare breed, it seems. I recently bought a Biostar U8668D V7 board to replace a bad board in an Emachines I had. I bought the board because it was cheap (under 50 bucks) and would support my 400MHZ Celeron 1.8mhz processor, as well as the PC 2100 ram. It has a Via chipset. I like the board, and it seems to be working quite well with the componants and Windows XP. It has an AGP slot which is running an nVidia 5200FX card.

Things to look for in a replacement board - first make sure that it supports your existing components, like RAM and CPU, in particular. Socket 478 processors come in different bus speeds - 400mhz, 533mhz, 800mhz, etc. RAM comes in even more types/speeds - some boards will support several speeds, while others only accept one type/speed.

I prefer Intel chipsets first, then VIA chipsets, finally SiS third - but this is just my opinion.

If cost is not a barrier, it doesn't hurt to find a board that not only supports your componants, but also is upgradeable. The board I mentioned above will also support 533mhz CPUs, so in the future I could go with a better processor. Many boards will support a range of CPU's and RAM modules - the more the merrier, I feel.

Here is a link to a site I buy the lions share of my computer componants from - as you can see the choice here is limited, but maybe it will give you a starting point.

    I've had people recommend Newegg:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000200280+1070509907&name=Socket+478

but I have no personal knowledge of as to the quality of this site - word of mouth though indicates Newegg is a reputable business.

id check out that ASUS board, they make awesome mobos but the others arent crap either. I too like Intel chipsets over VIA and SiS, they seem to perform better as well.

I wouldnt shop anywhere but newegg for computer parts, they are the best
