You should be able to find manuals such as Haynes at local library. I used to get them there until I broke down and bought the ones I needed.

Sorry!

I've not run across any downloadable manuals . . . . Only sites like this: http://www.faqfarm.com/Q/FAQ/802 and I'm not sure how reliable they are.

PP :)

Decode the VIN and in fact you may have an 88, or it was built in 88, and went iinto service in 89 as a 94 model- wait that was Chrysler who did that. A 92 manufactured Neon shows 92 in the VIN but 95 for model year.

Is that the tire pressure sticker, or the sticker for the door trim panel. The door panel could have been built and sitting in a bin for a while... :)

Or someone replaced the doors after an accident. ;)

ok well i cant seem to find a online guide so maybe someone on here might be able to help with it

the auto transmission seems to be slipping it will drive ok at first but thin it will slip and not want to go and will not go back into gear until you turn it off and start it back up. thin it will only go a few feet thin slip again and will not go into gear unless you turn it off yet again and start it back up.

can someone tell me why it might be doing that and what might be done to fix it? i have zero to no money to fix it so it has to be a cheap fix for now untell i can get some money

G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

Not positive about the symptoms, so I won't venture a guess, but Chilton has your book.

Chilton

Not free, but likely at your library.

And worth the price to buy it if you intend to maintain your own car. A real service manual is substantial, and copyrighted, and made/sold to make money. I doubt you'll find a free one online.

The Haynes or Chilton manual for the Taurus and Sable might help drivetrainwise.

Have you checked the fluid level? Engine running in park, If it's low that will cause your problem. This is the only cheap fix. Look at the condition of the fluid on the stick, If it's black or smells really burnt, then you likely have internal trans problems. That ride control light will not indicate a transmission disengagement problem. It's more to do with suspension.

ok i put some thick stuff in it and it seemed to work fine for the first few mins but thin the ride control beeped and it sliped at same time so i got it to go back into gear and after afew feet the ride control beeped and at the same time again it sliped. so now i am thinking the 2 problems are connected. dont you think? tommorrow morning befor i leave with a friend to drive them to a waterpark (hes paying my ticket:D:D leaveing at 8am;) ) i am going to jack it up pull off the wheeles and go over inch by inch of the ride control system. do yall think that i may be on the right track to fixing this problem?

Hey N5, I don't have access to shop manuals older than '92 at home, so when I get to work on Monday I gotta look this up. Are you sure the trans is actually slipping? I can't remember that system exactly, but is that ride control or traction control? Ride control automatically changes the firmness of the shock absorbers (actually struts on that car) and you will see actuators on top of the strut towers under the hood, traction control will apply the brakes to stop wheel spin. If the system is malfunctioning it may be applying the brakes for no reason. which may come across as a tranny slip.

cool thanks if you find anything out please let me know. it is the ride control light on and every time it beeps the transmission slips so maybe if what i think your thinking is the problem thin it wont cost me as much to fix. it does say ride control so unless the 2 systems are the same thing thin it dont have traction control. should i go out side start it up and floor it to see if i get wheel spin and if i dont thin it will mean it has traction control right?

Bad news N5, I'm at work and we have no continental manuals that old, or Taurus, which may use a similar system. Somethingt else to check though is the manual valve on the trans. This is connected to the shifter by cable. You want to make sure the trans is really in the drive position when the shifter is in the drive position. It may be off slightly. You may have to disconnect it at the trans, put the shifter in the "D" position, then count the detent stops when you shift the trans under the hood. When you have the trans in the drive detent the shift cable should line up perfectly with the ball stud on the trans. If it doesn't, adjust it. Be careful, and besure youcount the detents properly. If it's out a full detent, you may have counted from the wrong direction.

hmm i think that may of been a temp fix;) because now it seems to drive fine. i found a live wire burned out that i guess hooks to the ride control. even tho the ride control light still is on it drives fine but around 55-65mph (i don't really know the speed because the speed censer is bad so it always reads 0mph lol) but around that speed you can feel i guess its the drive plate slipping because you can feel it let off thin grip the tranny. i drove it like 5miles at different speeds and it only did that a list below is what i done to it.

1. removed some of the transmission fluid (free but a black eye i got to remember to always wear safety glasses)
2. added some $10 a qourt transmission stuff. helped a little ($10)
3. fixed ride control wire (free but cut my hand on wire cutters)
4. checked everything around the tires, transmission and engine (free but dropped tire on my foot twice!!!!!!!! remember never let car off jack without knowing your foot is out of the way)
5. took off the shift cable and placed it back on (free but hit my head on hood)
6: took car off tire ramps and ran over my foot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

i am begging to think this car is Kits evil twin Karr from knight rider!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sibeer do you anything eles i might try for maybe the ride control and maybe stop that drive plate sliping at that speed?

ok sibeer i drove it for like 10miles to test it out and at one time when i stoped and hit the gas it did not wont to go so i put it in park sut it off and started it back up afew mins later it worked fine again so could this be a overheating problem? do you happen to know if this model has a transmission cooler?

Have you ever replaced the filter? Was there a lot of sludge in the pan when you dropped it?

no i did not replace the filter tho i will soon even tho the guy i got it from said he just had someone replace the filter

The speed sensor signal is needed for the ride control for sure and maybe the problem with the trans. I'll try to find out. If by drive plate you mean clutch plates in the tranny, then that's likely something else and will kill your tranny if not corrected. Slipping clutch packs make trans fluid very black and smelly.

24. N5638J

N5638J Guest

ok yea i ment the clutch plates. i cant seem to locate the speed sensor on the transmission do you happen to know where i might find it on there? the transmission fluid is as red as the day it was put in. so i dont knwo if the speed sensor could be the cause of the ride control and maybe the tranny this maybe thats why it starts doing that at high speed

btw if you want to do this through e-mail feel free to e-mail me at kristopher.brock at gmail dot com that way we dont fog up this lounge forum with car talk;)

The speed sensor is on the back right side (passenger side) of the trans. You can follow the speedo cable from the middle of the firewall down to the speed sensor. It is above where the right axle enters the tranny. Pull the cable or sensor from the trans and snap spin it both ways while some one watches the speedo. MIght as well post here for now. the reader count is up there.

does it matter that its a "digital" display?
BTWi just seem thats a VW bus in your aviator lol

I don't drive one, but I used to run a '68 Dodge van that looked like one. That guy falling out is Freewheeling Franklin Freak of thje famous "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Doesn't matter about the digital, just means you'll need the key on to do that procedure.

ok cool right now i have the transmission drainning so i can change the filter and stuff and while i am under it i will try to find the sensor even tho i looked this morning and could not find it. i just heard it would cost $1200 - $1500 to get it rebulid. is that price right or am i being ripped?

29. sibeer

sibeer MajorGeek

From under the hood, lay over top of the engine and look down between the engine and firewall, you'll see the speedo cable leading to the sensor. That price could be ok. I'd want to be sure that it needs it. If your gonna do that pay someone to confirm the problem if you don't end up SURE yourself. Don't guess.

N5638J Guest

ok i will look for it again tomorrow morning
i dont really think it needs it but the person i got it from said i would need it but thats the last thing i would like to do because of the cost mainly. today after i got everything back on it after the tranny cleaning i took it for a drive and it seemed fine it was alittle late at shifting but other thin that it did ok oh yea i think i my of hit 100mph without even knowing it because the speedo hit 1mph lol you tend to go very fast on a long strate dirt road without knowing it;)
