    there is a few protection scanners free some run in background and some you just open the program and scan. here is a few of them.

    Malwarebytes Free
    Emsisoft emergency kit
    Norton Power Eraser
    Zemana Antimalware
    F-Secure Free Scanner

    Which Windows OS are you running? If Windows 10 or 11 then Defender is already installed & should be running in the background.

    Malwarebytes free does not offer active protection which the OP requested. The free version will work on a 14 day trial of the Premium version after that, all 4 protections are turned off.I've been dealing with this issue on one of the 5 computers running Premium versions since May 7th. The Premium version reverts to free anytime between 1 and 6 days then I have to activate it again. I had a long thread at the MBAM forum detailing this.
