    I'd like a recommendation for some simple free software to do basic editing of a PDF document.

    I know there are various tools in the Office Tools software section, but I have no idea which to choose.

    I have Adobe Reader, but it will not let me do a select and cut. :(

    Foxit reader allows .pdf editing and it's free. One caveat: the free version adds a watermark logo on the top margin. You may want to try the free version. If you like it, upgrade to the full version. IIRC, it's $19.95.

    @hrlow2
    Thanks for trying.

    @Don Gaynor
    Thanks for your suggestion. I had read that Foxit allowed editing, but was wondering if there was something else.
    I downloaded Foxit Reader from Major Geeks and installed.
    Unfortunately, it would not do what I wanted.
    Maybe it just is not possible to cut text from a .pdf as you would from a .txt or .doc, etc.

    Please be more specific as to what you hope to accomplish. "Editing" is a broad term. I do extensive .pdf editing in Foxit and I would appreciate knowing what can't be done with it. It will even read aloud for those of us who are paralyzed.

    As I mentioned in my first post, I was trying to Select a portion of text and Cut or delete it from the document.

    In both Adobe Reader and Foxit, after marking the selection, the Cut operation in the Edit menu was disabled.

    You can "copy" text from a .pdf document and paste it into a word processor document (for example) but you won't be able to "delete" text from the .pdf document with Foxit, to the best of my knowledge.

    There are generally "work-arounds" but your problem is still a bit "cryptic" to this tired old Irishman.

    What are you wanting to do after you finish your editing mjnc? PDF Reader 3.0 is an older program but it will let you edit a PDF including adding, deleting, moving, changing text. You can also wipe or modify an area containing text or portions of an image within the PDF.

    Unfortunately, the free version won't let you "save" the edited file but it will let you "print" it.

    Normally I use PDF-XChange or Nitro but PDF Reader 3.0 is small, simple and gets the job done.

    Thanks plastidust.

    I was going to use the edited copy as an attached file in an email, so being able to Save the edit would be necessary.

    My solution was to save the content in .txt format and work with that.
    Of course that's not the same, as formating and logos are not included.

    Weeeelllll, the idea was to use PDF Reader 3.0 in conjunction with one of these:
    Bullzip PDF Printer
    CutePDF Writer
    doPDF

    I've tried using PDF Reader with CutePDF Writer and it worked just fine, but I wouldn't want to do this on a regular basis as PDF Reader is pretty basic. PDF-XChange or Nitro are much easier to work with.

    Besides, doing so on a regular basis, while it may be legal, would be bending the rules of ethics a bit.

    Edit: I should have been a little more clear in my first post.
