    Hello

I just finished going through the "read and run me first" process, and I still have issues. I have the one that creates IDD.exe files (I saw someone else ask about it, unfortunately the files you recommend to fix aren't on my machine) It definately using an exe file masked as ms messenger (I have never used it and it keeps popping up on task manager) Anyway, hope you can help.. logs are attached

Please download and install Registrar Lite Make sure you select a Majorgeeks download link and not the Authors!

Run Registrar Lite navigate to the following key and take ownership of it (explained further down):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\mssmgr

To take ownership of the key do the following:
    • Copy & Paste the registry key from above into the address bar of Registrar Lite and hit the enter key. This will bring you to the registry key.
    • Click-on Security in the Menu
    • Select Take Ownership
    • Now leave RegistrarLite running and continue
    • Now run the REGISTRY PATCH below in this message.
    • Tell me the results. Any error messages?
    • Now in RegistrarLite click View and then Refresh
    • Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\mssmgr
    • Does the above mssmgr key still exist! If so, right click on it and select Delete.
    Here is the Registry Patch

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixWLK.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

After completing ALL of the above instructions, continue here!

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of winhab32.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the winhab32.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    awtqr.dll

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of winhab32.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    awtqr.dll

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iesearch&locale=EN_US&c=Q305&bd=pavilion&pf=laptop
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=Q305&bd=pavilion&pf=laptop
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=Q305&bd=pavilion&pf=laptop
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {61F1A339-168E-185E-DEAB-10630368D299} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cwl.dll (file missing)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {61F1A339-168E-185E-DEAB-10630368D299} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cwl.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E8FE846C-DCA3-42F7-BDA3-6EB1694DF556} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqr.dll
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tbsa] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\SEMBLY~1\nopdb.exe" -vt ndrv
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Fodgqgiz] C:\PROGRA~1\SSTEM3~1\WNSPOO~1.EXE
    O4 - Startup: My Little Pony Registration.lnk = D:\ATR1.EXE
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: winspool.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtqr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqr.dll

NOTE: HJT will popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK! This will open a command prompt window. In the command prompt window enter the below commands each followed by the Enter key.
    del %windir%\temp\win*.*
    exit

If you get an error message while doing the above command prompt step, just ignore it and continue!

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
Now back on Killbox's main window, Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note some of the files listed below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{7941CCA4-05D8-1033-0602-051222200001}\Update.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joe Santoro\Local Settings\Temp\win10B.tmp.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joe Santoro\Local Settings\Temp\win10F.tmp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winspool.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cwl.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ishost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lxwwflri.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sjokocsu.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnsintcc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\SEMBLY~1\nopdb.exe
    C:\Program Files\SSTEM3~1\WNSPOO~1.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqr.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winhab32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqtwa.ini

If Killbox does not reboot or if you get a Pending Operations type error message just click OK to continue and then just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folder and delete it if found:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{7941CCA4-05D8-1033-0602-051222200001}

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joe Santoro\Local Settings\Temp\

Now attach a new HJT log and tell me how the steps went.

Also attach a new log from ShowNew and a new log from GetRunKey.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for the help!

There were two problems running the fix:

    1) The Process Explorer link here on Majorgeeks isn't working, I got the program elsewhere, but I'm not sure that ok or not,

    More Importantly:

The "fixme" reg edit you wrote didn't work... itgave me an error that it wasn't a registry update or something.

Here are the logs... msmsgs is stills starting up in the background, so I suspect I'm not clean yet.

    Thanks again!

The link works fine for me.

It looks to me like you did not use Registrar Lite to take ownership of the registry key as requested and that you did not apply the first registry patch either. You must make sure that you follow the steps properly! You need to repeat the procedure and make sure you save the registry patches correctly (both of them). Run the procedure from start to end. If you get error messages you must give me the EXACT error message. There is nothing wrong with those patches. The only problem that would occur would be if they were not saved correctly. While some steps in the procedure will not be reveal certain files, they should all be run anyway. You also missed deleting this C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqtwa.ini with Pocket Killbox.

I gave it another try, and the registry stuff did work this time (I can't say why it didn't work the first time, I think I did the same thing)

"msmsgs.exe" is still popping up under processes every couple minutes... I've been ending the task right away each time, so nothing else has appeared, but I fear that it will.

I re-did the logs again they are attached.

    Thanks!

Edit: the forum won't let me attach runkeys again.. says its already attached... I'm guess that means its the same as before...

If the runkeys.txt log is still the same, it means you are not doing the step with RegistrarLite correctly. Did you go back and double check for the below key like I requested:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\mssmgr

You MUST make sure you look for that key and take ownership and you must delete it yourelf if it still exists. You can only delete it after taking ownership. Look for it right now. Does it exist???? If so, delete it. If it will not delete, take ownership and try again.

Also if you are getting any error messages of warnings from RegistrarLite, you must tell me what they are.

That key actually isn't there anymore, according to Registrar Lite, so it must have gotten deleted the first time. There were no error messages or anything...one thing, I had to type the add. in, when I tried to copy it in, it asked me if I wanted to add it to another folder.

I can look again if you think its there, but I feel confident its not.

It was only the 2nd registry update that didn't take the 1st time, it did work the 2nd time with no sort of error message.

It was still in the GetRunKey (runkeys.txt) log you attached in message # 4. And in message # 6 you said the log was still the same. That is why I was still saying you needed to delete it. Did you attach the wrong log? Please get a new log and attach it.

I checked again, the file is definately not there... here is the runkeys file.

I didn't re-run the others, since nothing should have changed. "msmsgs.exe" is still popping up regularly, I've been ending the task as soon as is pops, so nothing has popped up anywhere else, but I'm afraid it wil.

    Thanks again.

Okay the other problem from winlogonhook in the registry is gone!

Now run the below to remove Windows Messenger:

    Disable/Remove Windows Messenger

Now are you still getting msmsge.exe popping up?

  12. Wildfire2099

    That did it.

    Thanks!

You're welcome. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
