(Let me preface the next information by saying that with my initial hours of work below the home I was at did not have an active phone line... no updates were possible...> ARRRRGGGHHH)

I have a steady (non-computer) job but as I work myself into the IT field I do side jobs to keep my feet wet. I have removed spyware from more than a hundred computers and have always been able to get rid of all major problems in 1-4 hours. I was working on a computer last night that had a program I have seen quite a bit lately. It sits on top of the desktop, preventing you from clicking the actual desktop. I would like to know the name of this program if anyone has any idea.

I have always seen it with a black backround and large, underlined letters that say "WARNING Your Computer MAY be infected." I do not have the offending computer infront of me and am going back to the customer on Monday to re-install the OS if necessary. I would rather not do this.

The method I have used in the past to fix this is to first use AdAware with vx2. Run spybot s&d. Then uninstall any unknown programs in the add/remove panel. The programs that will not let me have access to them in this panel I go into the registry, do a search for those programs and remove them. I can not find the name of the program this time.

Every other scan I have tried including hijack this has not removed the offending program. (Hijack this was unable to remove an LSP(?) item and suggested an updated spybot to do this. Which I was unable to do because of the phone line.)

Anyone have a guess at the name of the offending program?

    Thanks, Sean

There are a load of problems like this lately. I'm not sure which you have. There have been items like SpySheriff, Smitfraud, Antivirus Gold to name a few. I would need to see more information to know which you have. No spyware removal tools will fix these problems. Manual removal steps and often registry patches are needed like shown in the SpySheriff sticky thread.

Have you run the steps we suggest in our READ ME FIRST sticky thread? I realize you could not run the online scanners or get updates but the tools in the sticky thread should be in your arsenal and on a CD you carry around for installation. Do you have a copy of the current HJT log you can post as an attachment?
