LOP, & Norton Online Scan

    Hi,

I'm working on a PIII running XP with 128MB Ram.

    I followed the instructions.

Initially, the Trend Micro Online Scan revealed 2 adware objects which I deleted.
Norton Online Scan revealed 5 objects which I couldn't do anything about. One reason was because in Safe Mode I couldn't resize or move the screen, and I didn't see anyway to address the objects found.

I ran the installed Norton Antivirus in safe mode and was able to delete 5 objects.

I ran AdAware and was able to remove several objects. SpyBot S&D removes several objects.

Upon rebooting, LOP always returns. System Restore is off, show all files is on, and hide files with known extensions is off.

Now, when I run Norton Online scan (in safe mode with networking), it doesn't run to completion. It detects one threat, but stops before completing with a ZoneAlarm message indicating that there was a problem with the installation.

Have you seen this behavior before?

Also, if there are several users on the system, is each user profile independent? Can I log on as administrator and clean the whole system or do I have to log on to each user and clean individually.

Each user account must be cleaned separately.

For the one you started this help request for, do the following:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Hi again, Chaslang. U da man!

Attached is the log. I'm cleaning this for a friend. The funky R0, R1 look suspicious to me.

I'll start cleaning the other user profiles on the computer.

    Thanks!

Your OS and IE versions are way out of date. This is a major security risk. After we fix your current problems, you MUST get updated or you will continue to have problems.

I see the below two instances of Internet Explorer running:
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
    c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe

Did you forget to exit them or are they running on there own?

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Print these instructions or save locally because you must be offline (no browsers running) before continuing.

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
    c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe

If they restart, physically unplug (pull cable) from the internet and kill them again. If they still restart, just ignore and continue.

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".

Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.iffpbstxcinjlacddvgkebvop.net/3SLMkvdlog7DA63p3ThMxQcJmA89ZEsrGu9BezR0ti_jwWF095QHh5ObdIGjpS/P.html
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.ikomzyogkgk.biz/3SLMkvdlog7JVFn6otc0gOlGdWou4yiUwITar6zHSX4.htm
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7DA33881-7B36-68CB-BCAA-28F7B200E86B} - C:\DOCUME~1\MOM&DA~1\APPLIC~1\DARTPL~1\UserTeam.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Lite bolt clock four] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Isosafelitebolt\Popfind.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Inter pure] C:\DOCUME~1\Andrew\APPLIC~1\GLUEMP~1\WinCash.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\MOM&DA~1\Application Data\DARTPL~1\UserTeam.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Isosafelitebolt\Popfind.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew\Application Data\GLUEMP~1\WinCash.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

    U Da Man.

Yeah, I know that the OS is out of date. I was waiting to clean stuff up before I started updating.

After following your suggestions, the AdAware and SpyBot scans are clean.
I have attached a new HJT log.

    1) These extra steps, are they always necessary or just for LOP?

    2) Would I have to go through all of the steps again for each user profile?

The system still boots a bit slow, but that may be a function of the processor and memory right? Especially considering the system is running Norton.

Thanks again for your help! If you see anything else, please advise. After all users are clean, I'll do the update.

Extra cleaning steps are necessary for many problems these days. The standard cleaning procedures can fix thousands of problems but the latest forms of malware are now so randomly named and they do better jobs at hiding themselves. That is why we have to resort to manual cleaning steps.

You really should run thru all the steps for each user account to be sure they are clean. The HJT step for fixing the items I last gave you may or may not be needed. Or it could even be that different items are found.
