losing associations on icons

Is there a malware or worm that is wiping the associations (and ability to load .exe files) from the desktop? I have read countless stories of this and have it on my computer, but cannot find a solution (and neither have the other forums). One day I had them on my computer and the next, they were gone. I sent my computer back to before this happened and it worked for a few days, but came back. Now the only workable icon is IE7 and Mozilla Firefox.

Is anyone aware of such a thing?
