Loss of internet after 5 minutes

I am working on a computer remotely that loses internet access. After the computer is restarted it has internet access for about 5 minutes and then it loses access, exept that my remote connection still works so the internet is still there. I can ping a website with both the ip address and the web address, but IE and Firefox can not find eather site. I have used spybot and ad aware and removed some spyware, but not a lot. Hijack this is now clean of anything unusuall. Any ideas? Thanks

 

If this helps it is a windows xp service pack 2 machine.

The firewall is part of the anti virus package. It is the zone alarm suite.

 

Try disabling the firewall temporary.

 

Thanks for your help. I got lucky and found the problem. The computer had spyware on it that caused the antivirus and firewall to not open or load right. I had removed the spyware, but the antivirus and firewall still would not open. I had eliminated this as the problem by duplicating the problem in safe mode with networking. As a last resort I uninstalled the zone alarm antivirus and firewall. That fixed the problem I do not know why it was blocking internet in safe mode, but that fixed it anyway. Thanks for your input.
