Ok, I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 #dv6704nr with a fresh install of Xp. I have attached a recent everest report. I have been to the HP website for help AND updated drivers to NO avail. I have been to Microsoft and even downloaded SP3 which made matters worse. I now have no sound, and I can't run any type of recovery because I now have NO DVD/CDROM in my device manager. I tried resolving this by deleting my upper and lower filters in my registry-that did NOT help me. Does anyone have any other suggestions to help me get my CDrom drive back into my device manager? It is an Optiarc model

I have an AMD 64 Athlon X2 with Nvidia Geforce Go 7150M graphics, Everest says that my Motherboard is an HP dv6700

Try uninstalling any DVD/CD rom driver from hardware manager, shut down, unplug it, start up......shut down, plug it back in and see if it detects it as new hardware.
You could also try plugging it into a different cable/slot.

I don't see why it wouldn't recognise the DVD rom as plug n play.

This is a laptop pc not a desktop so there isn't any plug n play action going on. Also there is no dvd/cdrom being detected. It is as if it isn't there so there is nothing to delete and re-recognize.

Ah ok, well I know this is probably a stupid question but are you sure the drive is connected properly? Is it one of those clip out and slot in drives? Or one you have to dismantle half the machine to get to?

    Is it showing in Bios?

If you used it to install XP then it must be something simple, maybe reinstall XP (as long as the drive is recognised outside of windows)

Nope, not in the bios, and not recognized by windows either thats why I can't run any type of recovery like XP repair. Its just not there when you open MY COMPUTER.

Oh, if it's not in the bois then maybe the drive is toast.

I've never seen working hardware not show up in bios, the only time I ever see that happen is when the hardware is dead.

I could be wrong but personally in your position I'd be looking at testing another drive in the machine/testing the drive in another machine or buying another drive.
