Lost Desktop

On startup I have lost my tool bar & icons (no pre warning). In safe mode all are there. Running XP Professional. Only access is via New Task. Do not have and can not start explore.exe. tried just about every tool I can find to either identify or fix, but to no avail. On various forums, but still no resolution. Tried system restore, but to no avail. Any pointers / help would be grateful

I have followed all the instructions on pages 1-6, including the alternate scans. I did not read the bit about what was found and fixed!, however all that was found seemed to be fixed with each scan. There seemed to be nothing major(but what do I know). I have also uninstalled MSJVA.
Summary, when I load the system (normal mode) all I get is a blue screen. To start anything I have to use the Alt/Ctrl/Del and start a new task. When I start in safe mode the tool bar and icons appear.
I have tried restore point, going back 3 restores, to no avail.
As requested I have attached the HJT log.
