   can't seem to reset have tried activating defalt on tool bar and I just have a straight line I know I must be missimg something simple but can't figure it out oh yeah using xp home

   Did you goto Start > Settings > Taskbar and Start Menu and put a tick in the Hide Inactive Icons box > Apply?
   
   or if your not using the classic menu.. goto the Control Panel and open up Taskbar and Start Menu from there.
