That is a legitimate file required by Windows. Personally, I would never delete anything without asking a professional first.

    Lets start by trying this:

If your running WinXP try to replace it with the attached file. If not let me know!

    Just extract this into C:\WINDOWS\system32

    EDIT by chaslang: Attachment remove.

To make sure this is not a WORM doing this.

Please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99.1 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an ATTACHMENT.
All instructions are covered in the sticky thread
NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a Hijack This log as an ATTACHMENT to your message (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post). Please close unnecessary running programs before you run HijackThis. You must close each of the following: your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc.

DO NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

    BJ,

It is illegal to upload and send any copyrighted material to users. I know you are trying to help but Microsoft would not appreciate this. The proper method is for the user to get the file from their original CD or even from the CAB files that are on their harddisk. If the OS here is WinXP all the needs to be done is to go to the i386 folder and get a copy of taskmgr.exe from there. It may need to be expanded from taskmgr.ex_ (depends on the how it was installed).

Please explain exactly what guide you are referring too. I know of no such guide asking you to remove a valid Task Manager application.

    What is your OS?
