i recently upgraded to windows xp service pack 2. however, when i loaded windows i lost sound, both system and through the speakers. i replaced the sound card and still no sound. when i trouble shoot the the audio the message i get is that the device is working properly. there is no warning symbol on the device driver icon. does anyone have any suggestions how i can get the sound back?
    thanks,

Make sure in BIOS that your sound card is enabled (not onboard sound).

i entered the setup section when i booted and could not find the sound enable. i am not used to xp yet and not familiar with all the changes. if you could give me some directions i am will to give your solution a try.

the onboard sound card is part of the motherboard, i do not know anything about it. the sound card that i bought is a rather inexpensive one that i bought from best buy, dynex dx-sc51. that is about all the info i have on it right now. sorry i could not give you more info.
the man that built my machine for me could not find a reason the sound was not working and could not offer me any explaination. this guy repairs and installs computers and servers for a living. the solution has to be simple. that is why no one that i have talked to can figure it out.

I saw somebody had a problem like this the other day and actually did a sfc /scannow and it repaired some damaged Windows files and fixed the sound issue. That couldn't hurt. This scans Windows for damaged system files. You can run it by going to start > run> sfc /scannow.

About BIOS, just navigate through BIOS until you see a something where you can disable onboard sound, maybe under advanced features.
