I also lost volume on my pc as well. This happened after installing a web cam and Skype 5.1. Mine is an older computer and can't use the newer version of Skype.

Right click in taskbar/properties/notification area/select which system icons to always show/click which ones you want (volume)./apply/ok

    Volume isn't included in choices.

Try Volume2. It won't leave the system tray like the XP one.

It's not here at MG, but I use it. It's got some great additional features too. It's not a bad thing, but it's wriitten by a Russian, so the first menu is in Russian. There is support for numerous languages, however...

I need to use as few resources as possible, so I went with the bottom choice. It was on Major Geeks. Is the top link for a 32 bit, the 2nd author's site said 64 bit.

The bottom link wouldn't install one of the dll's, so I'll try the top link you mentioned.

    Blueone...

Good point. Apologies I didn't notice that. Apparently that is the 64 bit version. There is a 32 bit version on the developer's site here:

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse.html

Installing/removing instructions are about half way down. Link to the 32 bit version is there in the instructions.

I saw on the net a comment by a user who said Volumemouse uses less resources in a thread about Volume2. Volume2 does get the good reviews and all, and it doesn't do anything to my resources to speak of (core 2 duo 4 GB RAM). I guess it depends on which you prefer overall or which performs better on your PC.

Certainly no harm in trying the portable version of Volume2. No installation, so if you decide to remove it, just zap the folder to the recycle bin

Still no luck installing either, it won't install the helper dll. I even disabled my firewall and it still wouldn't.

    Is this on XP?

Did you try the portable version of Volume2?

I did but with same results. BTW, I forgot to thank you for trying to help me. I'm thinking it's in the web cam settings or Skype, I wasn't having any sound problems until I installed them.

That's frustrating. You could try to see if you can update the drivers for those devices...

Open Device Manager and look under Sounds, game controllers, and video. Right click on each of the devices and select "Update Driver"...

I don't see an answer to the question about whether it's XP. Is it?
Are you missing any OTHER icons that you would expect to show up close to the clock (not at the far end of the systray; closer to the QuickLaunch bar)?
Are you using autologon (are you skipping the welcome screen, with its invitation to click your icon to get started)?
Do you load a lot more stuff at boot than you used to (i.e., did your new Skype and your new Web cam add icons to a tray that already had several more icons in it than just the volume icon)?

    Looking forward to some answers.

    XP
    No other missing icons
    No auto logon
Only camera icon in task bar now but did have Skype

BTW, I resolved the issue by doing a system restore.

You don't need third party software of any sort. A shortcut to sndvol32.exe will do it all for you. If you add the parameter -N or -S after a space, after the .exe in the path, you'll get the control interface you want (full, or just the one you saw when you clicked the speaker icon before it disappeared). Works.
