Low Memory Performance

I'm not sure how much stock any of you put into the pcpitstop tests, but I tried it out to see what it said...(see attachments).

I recently doubled up my RAM (2x512mb), but according to the site, it is not performing all that well.

Any suggestions? I already went into BIOS and enabled the processor/memory cache, but it does not seem to help.

    Thanks

i think this is for speed of your memory you have alots of choice depend of your boards like 133 266 333 533 800 mhz...

Depends on the type of RAM installed. What type of RAM did you install (PC2100, PC2700)? Also depends on the FSB.

Also depends on what you are running at the same time as the tests. Performance can be skewed if there are intensive applications running in memory at the time of the test.

    Hi jig74
You made a good decision. Increasing the amount of real memory is one of the paths to achieving a faster computer. Increasing the system ram can speed up those sluggish 3D shooter games - assuming your video card is on the game's acceptable list. Windows2000 and WindowsXP can handle a gigabyte of ram without problems. But Windows98 and WindowsMe should only have 768 Meg maximum to avoid the issue of "real" memory addresses colliding with "virtual" memory addresses. When these operating systems were conceived people were running 4 to 16 megabytes of ram, so virtual addresses near the gigabyte boundary, just weren't a problem.:)

Also, my CPU FSB shows 200 MHz-currently running @ 199.78 MHz.

This is what CPU-Z shows for mine, which is a laptop, so that would be what we are looking for.

Check the Freq/Volt settings and the Advanced Chipset Features pages and see what the Clock speed and multipliers are set at in the Bios Settings pages.

    Ok, back in a few.

    Thanks.

You know ACE, when I looked at mine, Slot#2 does not show a chip, even though both are filled in my laptop.

Well, under frequency/voltage menu in BIOS, I see the following:

    Auto-detect PCI/DIMM Clk (enabled)
    Spread Spectrum (enabled)
    CPU Clock (200MHz)
    CPU Voltage Regulator (default)
    DDR Voltage Regulator (default)

    CPU Core 1.44V
    2.50V 2.49V
    3.30V 3.23V
    5.00V 4.99V
    12.00v 12.06V
    Voltage Battery 3.15V

    Advanced Chipset Features:

    DRAM Clock (by SPD)
    DRAM Timing (Auto by SPD)

    MISC---SYS Temp-32C CPU Temp-48C CPU Fan-3068RPM Case Fan-0RPM

Also attached MEMORY page from cpu-z.

    Thanks

Very odd ...do you have the latest chipset drivers installed ??

Do you need the full report, or just summary and/or hardware pages?

    Thanks

Hardware summary in plain text will do for starters.

Well, the log is showing that HT is enabled, and that it is running at the fastest speed possible for the processor, same for the GPU.

I only briefly skimmed through, but everything looks fine.

You have two memory slots, and each one has a 512MB stick of PC3200 DDR SDRAM, for a total of 1024MB.

    Thanks for the links :)

I have downloaded the 1.2d file, and now have the .BIN file extracted on my pc...what do I do now? I've never done this before:confused:

    Thanks.

You have to also download the Bios Flash utility which is the second pull-down at that link I posted. And there is a link titled "How to use the Flash utility", which tells you how to do it.

Just do not run any other programs like games or P2P while doing it. This means shut down all browser windows, music programs and the such. Also do not shut down the machine until it is done.

Out of curiousity, why are you flashing the Bios, and what is it you hope to achieve?

His bios is the older version, and the newer one fixes a few things.

    1. Update micro code CPUID = 0F44H, Patch ID = 02h.
    2. Patch need set time/date/year second time after clear CMOS issue.
    3. Support S3.
    4. Patch NX , C1E , TM2 function.
    5. Support E0 stepping Hi-ratio frequency
    6. Update micro code.
    7. Set NX BIOS Function Default is Disabled.
    8. Fixed Prescott CPU speed 3.4G shows 2.8G
    9. Support ATMEL flash ROM.
    10. Patch ATI 9800 AGP card compatiblity.
    11. Fixed some k/B mouse cannot resume from S1

Yeah I understand that, and I read the link.

What I don't understand is, "is his PC suffering from any of those bugs?"

If it is, great, go for it.

If not, he's taking a risk for absolutely no gain. (especially considering he has never done this before)

There is no problem with trying due to it may fix some problems, but then again it will not fix the memory lag, due to those tests are always lopsided and PCPitstop is not the best place to test.

Memtest86 is probably the best test, due to it has been around the longest (pre-windows).

There is no problem if he was experienced and confident, and if it fixed problems he was having.

None of that applies to him, so he is doing this for nothing.

Risking permanently screwing up a computer, that's working fine, isn't worth it for no gain.

As far as Pitstop, I wouldn't even waste my time going there, let alone flash my Bios because of it.

Well, thanks for all your help, guys :)

My main concern, initially was my poor memory performance in comparison to other similar systems (according to pcpitstop).

As far as the flashing goes, I think I'll sleep on it and look at things again tomorrow before I really mess something up. I've recently been thinking about going to an MSI or Asus MB anyway, so I may wait and see what happens with a different board.

    Thanks again.

I would not go by PCPitstop. Use something like Memtest86, due to it will not be as weighted as PCPitstop, along with the fact that there are other good system testing programs out there.

Do yourself a favour, and as brownizs suggested, stay away from PCPitstop.

    It's more alarmist than accurate.
