    Hi!
I thought I removed all viruses from my computer inc. w32.wallz. i keep getting a low memory alert and lookingat the task manager - the msmsgs.exe is taking way too much space and I'm not even using it. Could not disable it.
    Thanks for helping,
    ADi

go to www.answersthatwork.com and select the "Tasklist" option. This lists many valid and invalid tasks commonly found on PC's. Also, check your task bar icons - speaker, firewall, and anti-virus icons are normal, essential icons; but many other programs when installed will start themselves and place a "quick-start" icon in the taskbar whenever you reboot. Each icon in the task bar takes a bite out of your pc's overall resources (and performance), some more then others. I hate this . . . it's like leaving your car running all day just in case you want to take a drive at some point. Unless you use a particular program often (or all the time like a firewall or anti-virus program) it should not appear in the task bar. Right clicking on an icon will usually pop up a menu where you can change settings to prevent loading on reboot. You can also open the run command (Start button, then Run) On the window that pops up type msconfig and hit OK. Go to the Startup tab and see just what is loading when you boot your PC.
I also recommend www.symantec.com - go to their "Security Response" section, and then to "view all virus threats". According to this site W32.Wallz is a worm that attempts to exploit the Microsoft Windows Local Security Authority Service Remote Buffer Overflow. Try this URL (not sure it it will work):

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.wallz.html

If the URL doesn't work, just search for w32.wallz at the site.
Make sure you have all the updates and patches from Microsoft for the operating system you are using. I cannot stress this enough . . . take the time and get the updates. Without them you are a sitting duck, and somebody is gonna come along and pluck you.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
