I see I'm not the only one trying to conserve or otherwise deal with power limitations. My simple question is: is there a PCI x16 HD/blu-ray capable vid card that is designed to be very low-power-consumptive?????
    need reco!
    thx

What power supply wattage are you looking at? in other words: What do you consider "low power consumptive"? What are the other hardware (DVD, etc.), CPU and memory specs do you have?

i'm not even intelligent enough to answer your question, but I think I found the general macro-answer while browsing on the subject.

First, it looks like the jury has decided ATI based cards are the way to go for HD & Blu-Ray. Nvidia requires one to buy their separate video decoding/player package, whereas the ATI based [3850 & up] devices decode on the board. prices are reasonable but the hitch, re power, is that they are still early-generation boards with too many discrete components. Early-gen are always power hogs, heat-pumps requiring good airflow, they have their own fans, etc. So, the whole gen is 'power-hog'. If you poke around the forums you'll see lots of surprises and disappointments in that vein. Usually we don't know we're out of power until we hit the wall. Calculating power-need for an entire system is not trivial.

This sorta brings up a second hdwe issue which is how to get power to an otherwise good system that is not physically built for a big [physically] power supply. i would not mind mounting a monster power supply in its own little cooling box if I just had the cable-length to run it to my main rig.
