I am running Windows ME. Today, when trying to open an Excel file , and later opening Word, my computer freezes. Ctrl Alt Delete gives me a message that the resources are damgerously low. I did a virus scan, found 2 files (BB Class & Verifier Bug.class) infected with Trojan.Byte Verifier. I quarantined the infected files, but still get the same message when trying to open Excel

    Any ideas??

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah, Upgrade to XP if you can.

ME and all previous windows are limited to 64k gdi resources. No way to change it. XP has no limitation.

Risus, I run W98SE with 288mb Ram. I am on the Net now, with all the normal stuff I load to protect me on the Net. Zone Alarm, Spybot S&D, Avast, InstallSpy, etc.

I have also, just now, opened up an Excel spreadsheet, and a Word Document. According to Resource Meter I still have 68% GDI left.

Go to Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Resource Meter <enter>. This will load the Resource Meter in a little box down by the time. I suggest having the REsource Meter loaded all the time, from bootup. I do, and it tells me straight away what hogs resources at any time.

Try opening and closing various programs and see how the green bars (and percentages free) go up and down according to the resources used. You may have to wait a few seconds as you close down stuff for ME to free up the resources. You will soon see what is hogging your resources. Once your Resource meter shows red bars then you are running low.

I doubt if it is Word or Excel.
How much RAM is installed on your PC?
Are you running Norton's AntiVirus ( a known resource hogger).
What programs are you running when this problem happens?
Upgrading to XP is not always a possibility due to cash and/or PC specification limitations.
It is easy to suggest this but not always feasible. Post your specs and the programs you run and we will narrow down to the cause of your problem. Bazza

I supposedly have 300 mb RAM. I didn't have any other programs open but I do have Zone Alarm, SpyBot AdAware and NuPust Home Page guard going. I do have Norton AV as well.

As a followup, I first opened a jpeg file in my documents without any problem. I tried to open a small excel file and got this error message: Excel caused invalid page fault in module USER.EXE at 0007:00005744. I clicked close and then this error message: SGBHP caused invalid page fault in module USER.EXE at 0007:00005744. The system then froze.

Okay, have you scanned for spyware? Spyware can use up system resources to the point of saturation. Make sure Spybot and AAw are updated, too.

First cab off the rank, try loading the Resource Meter as I suggested, then close down Nortons Anti Virus and see what difference that makes. Bazza

Just ran AdAware, had one data miner. Deleted that, no problems. Will run SpyBot S&D later.

Laoded the resourse meter, got error: RSRCMTR caused a divide error in module USER.EXE at 0010:000035f7
Closed that, disabled Norton, same result.

Sorry Risus. Cannot help you with that error. Someone else please step in.
Resource Meter will definitely help, once you solve this error. Bazza

It could be a corrupt template.

    Search for a file "normal.dot".

    Delete any instances and reboot.

Thanks guys for your replies. After a bit of searching, a friend suggested I go to file C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\Excel.xlb and rename it Excel1.xlb.
    That solved the problem.
