    Hi,
Something is preventing me from installing Windows XP SP2.
I am running XP professional SP1. When I install SP2, all seems to go well, the installation finishes, the computer reboots, goes the the finishing installation stage, the the starting windows screen appears and a message pops up which says"lsass.exe An internal error has occurred in RPC" with an OK button . Click OK , computer reboots (have tried from windows update, download redistr, safe mode and straight to SP3 all have the same result).
I get back to where i started by running windows repair with sp1 disk and restoring system state data.
I don't know if it is Malware preventing me from installing SP2 but i can't find any other reason.
    Logs attached
If someone could have a look and let me know if its malware i would much appreciate it.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

While I do have something for you to do, I don't think it is the cause of your problems with updating Windows. You will most likely have to work that issue in the Software Fourm.

First do you know what the below file is?
    Code:
    2008-10-30 15:05 . 2008-10-30 15:06 19,892,973 --a------ C:\adults_AU.zip

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 6

Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi Chaslang,
Thanks for taking the time to have a look at my logs

C:\adults_AU.zip is EBgames Australia online catalog..don't know why they zip it. Just a pdf.

Computer is running well ..was always running ok except for the SP2 prob.

I had a problem this morning with the video driver. The Nvidia control panel refused to open, so i have updated the driver between my first post and your reply.

Java update 6-10 poped up an error that SP1 was not a supported operating system but allowed it to install anyway. I think the last java update i tried to install was 6-7. but reverted to 6-6 because some java based netware management tools did not function correctly. I have installed 6-10 for now ..we'll see how it goes.

    Logs attached as requested.
    Regards
    Sereg

Your logs are clean. I suggest you do the below and then goto the Software Forum to try and work out your issues with Windows Updates.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    5. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
