lsass object name not found

I am running Windows XP pro sp2 and whenever I start the machine in normal mode or safe mode, XP will load to the logon screen and pop up a dialog box that reads, "LSASS.EXE - OPERATION FAILED" with an option to press "OK".

When I press OK the computer reboots and comes back to the same error. I cannot get around it in normal mode or safe mode as the error appears in both. I originally was infected with malware(mljge.dll). I removed the file and the entry in the registry for this file and when I re-booted this problem started.

Is there a way I can fix this without restoring the entire operating system or removing the hard drive? Any way to run removal tools and repair the LSASS.exe file outside of Windows?

Well, assuming there is no file damage, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 should work, but may bring your spyware back. Of course, thast better than not booting eh. Then you could visit our malware forum.

Being that you deleted a registry entry when this happened, I'm thinking a registry replacement is your answer.

 

the registry entries that I deleted were to load the file mljge.exe which symantec identified as a threat. I'm trying to find out what virus that this file is associated with because I don't remember what virus symantec said that was found with this file. When I found out more info through the anti-virus program, there was also as reference to a .dll file that is suppose to spawn the .exe file in my system32 dir. I found the file but couldn't delete it because the file was in use, so I started windows in safe mode and deleted the registry entry for this file and deleted the file. when I restarted that's when I got caught in the lsass loop of error and restart.
