The other day I went to use my MacBook Air (11 inch, Mid 2011) and it wouldn't respond to the power button. It was completely turned off. I tried a bunch of stuff such as holding down the pwr button for 10 sec, resetting the SMC, and opening the back and unplugging the battery for a few minutes, but couldn't get it to start. I then removed the SSD, and when I put it back in, i got the Apple chime and it booted. Once it started though it was super slow and choppy, with the pinwheel gong crazy, and the fan running high all the time. It then randomly shut down again, and I had to mess with it for a while to get it started again. I sort of went back an forthfor a while with similar scenarios, sometimes when I would get it started again it would go through the whole Apple logo boot, and sometimes it would go right to the password screen, with no audible chime. Every time, it seemed to be the SSD removal/replacement that triggered it though. I reinstalled the OS, but it didn't change anything. So I'm 99.9% sure it's a hardware problem, but I guess it could be in the BIOS/Firmware also. I wanted to get some input before I started spending $$ and throwing arts at it. Also, the charge cable is lit up green, and when it starts it's at 100% battery life. Any thoughts?

    Hi Jools

Have you managed to work this one out yet as MACs are not my strong point at all but I'd be tempted to get a preliminary quote off Apple to see what the issue is and cost before proceeding.

Hey sorry, I didn't get a lot of interest in the post, so I didn't update it. But here's what happened, I did a ton of troubleshooting, and I determined that when I disconnected the battery and reconnected, it would start as long as the MagSafe (charger) was connected, but the fan would be running at full speed the whole time. If I restarted, it would reboot fine, but if I shut down and tried to power up again, I would have to disconnect/reconnect the battery to get it to power on, and the MagSafe would have to be connected. I removed the SSD/WiFi/diconnected touchpad, and had all the same behaviours. If I drained the battery a bit, so that the MagSafe LED was amber instead of green, when I pressed the power button (in a non-boot scenario) it would cycle colors between amber and green, indicating that the power button press was registering, but it wasn't booting. Did an SMC and PRAM reset, no effect. I did a full wipe of the SSD and restored the OS, no effect. I ran Apple diagnostics (holding D on startup), and it came up with "There may be an issue with the System Management Controller (SMC) PFM006" and "There may be an issue with the power management system PPN001". At this point, I went to the Apple store. The guy there didn't really impress me too much, and suggested changing the battery Main Logic Board, and the I/O (MagSafe) board. It displays all the same behaviors with the battery in or out, so I think I can scratch that one off the list. He told me the SMC controller is part of the I/O board, which I'm 99.9% sure it is not (it's on the Main Logic Board), so strike 2. And changing MLB? Sure I guess, it's a pretty safe catch all. At any rate, they wanted $893 + tax, and all he was really doing is shotgunnning parts at it. They want to replace everything except the case speakers and touchpad/keyboard. Not much help as far as I'm concerned. I'm kind of stuck at this point... Any input is appreciated.
