I have been attempting to clone a dying HD. I have navigated most of the choppy waters with the help of MG.

    Here's what has happened thusfar:

    1. Got new HD, same size as old one
    2. formatted drive
    3. installed macrium reflect
    4. made full image of C: on new drive (F)
    5. Attempting to 'restore' volume on F to make it my new C;, so I can remove the old drive.

I partitioned the new drive so that F: is only the disk image. The rest of the space is NTFS unallocated.

When I go into disk restore, I have the disck image. When I attempt to write it to the unallocated space, that space is greyed out, and I cannot write to it.

Im sure I am missing a step, or made some error along the way,but I am stumped. Read the Macrium tutorials, that only served to further confuse me.

I really need to get this machine back up before Tuesday. All help is appreciated - TIA

It's possible that the unallocated space on the new drive is simply not big enough to restore the image of C to. How much space is Windows using on C at present, and how much unallocated space remains on the new drive?

Are you trying to restore this image from Macrium running in Windows or from the Macrium rescue CD? As this is an active system partition your are trying to restore you should be using the CD, and if it restores without errors you should then physically remove the old drive before rebooting.

Thanks earthling - will try booking from CD and see if that does it.

The space needed is 197m, - I have 350m available ob that drive so it should be enough space.

If its not enough space, what would i do\? I can reformat the new drive and wipe it clean, giving me 500m free- but then getting the disc image on there is where I get confused.

Basically - I think I am almost done, but just not getting these last couple steps.

I guess you really mean GB, not m? When you say the space needed is 197, is that the size of the backup file or the space occupied by Windows on C? The target space/partition has to be at least as big as the space used on the drive that was imaged, as the image file is compressed..

If space is a problem on the new drive you would need to reduce the size of C first by removing stuff to DVD or to an external drive and then creating a new image. 197GB, if that is what you meant, is truly an enormous system partition.
