Hey, im 17 years old, and i have played a lot of text based MMORP games. I would really like to have one myself. Most people i talk to have been given the outline script and have been able to edit it a little. I would like to have a game but do not have a clue how to make one from scratch. If anyone has an outline or could help me i would really appreciate it.

If not i will just have to wait til i go to Uni as i will be studying Computer Science or Computer Science with games technology.

    Thanks For Your Help

Since no one else has responded to your request I thought I'd provide this info (derived from a web search). Maybe there's something below that will be of use to you or enable you to contact someone with more specialized knowledge about this topic.

    1) Check out this page (and be sure to look down near the bottom of the page for the section labeled "Similar Topics" to see what's there:

    2) Also look at:

    3) And:

I didn't find anything else about suggested tools for creating text based MMORPG's but thought some of the following links might possibly be of interest to you...

    4) Check out the free MMORPG 2D game engine known as Eclipse.

"Eclipse is a free to use 2D game engine. This game creator makes online mmorpgs. No previous knowledge is necessary because Eclipse uses a simple point and click system. If the software does not have the requirements you need you can program it with the source."

Lots of info about it here as well as a download link for the free game engine: http://www.freemmorpgmaker.com/index.php

    5) Check out the links on this site devoted to the programming language Lua which, as you'll see, has been used to create at least substantial parts of commercially successful games:

    http://lua-users.org/wiki/LuaUses

Maybe there's something there you can use though I can't say how well Lua would function strictly as a tool for designing a stand alone text based MMORPG.

If you haven't actually done any programming yet I suggest you not wait until you start college. You might want to look into the Python language which is quite powerful yet relatively easy to learn. There are quite a few books about Python as well as online tutorials and Python programming reference resources. Try a web search on "Python" or "Python game programming" to get some info. And find a good tutorial to begin with as trying to learn programming initially just by reading the language's reference guide will likely put you to sleep at best or discourage you and drive you crazy at worst!

The old BASIC computer language is a high level language which, in most of it's incarnations, allows some string programming and parsing that would be useful skills to learn for programming any sort of text based game. You might look into downloading Liberty BASIC or look for a book like "BASIC Programming for Dummies" which, I think, includes Liberty BASIC on a CD-ROM that comes with the book. I doubt that a game written in BASIC would be suitable for an MMO game (as in most versions it's an interpreted language and therefore quite slow), but using it to learn string manipulation techniques (string = text) might be quite useful to you. All this is assuming you don't already know how to program in BASIC.

Finally, while I don't want to discourage you, you should probably read the info at:

    http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/showtopic59947.htm

That advice may not be as appropriate for a text-based MMO game as for a graphically designed game, but I suspect it is.

No doubt some of what I've said here you already know. But as I have no way of knowing your level of programming skills or knowledge I thought it better not to assume too much.

Good luck to you and I hope some of this has been helpful. Best wishes for success in learning game programming or wherever your studies take you in the future.

It occurred to me that you might want to try posting in the "Programming" forum here at MajorGeeks. Perhaps someone with more extensive knowledge in this area will be more likely to spot your question there and provide some help.
