i work in an enterprise level enviornment where we are starting to see major issues with our cdroms. The cdrom will not work when you insert a disc, dvd, audio or data disks, the drive just says "cd-drive" instead of what it really is. this is happening with both cd rom and cd\rw drives, on both dell and hp machines, and in both xp and 2000. The problem is fixed with a reboot, but only for the first couple times you use the drive, then you will need to reboot again to fix it again. replacing the drive fixes it only for a little while then it returns. any ideas? please.

did that. plus we are looking at different cdroms in different os's... all of them would not simultaniously get a bad driver. is there an update that MS put out that might have done this?

Microsoft have an autoplay repair tool , called autofix which might/might not help, for CDRoms. Otherwise, I came across this problem on one or two pc's, and found that the problem occurs in the reading, and writing area's. I did the same as you, changing around. In the end I replaced the cdroms, and still found it had difficulty with some cd's.I now find that if you put a cd-r into them, it might play up, but a cd-rw works o.k
I will come back to you on this, if you have not solved it
