    Hi guys,
firstly apologies for this long rant but I need to give all the info. I was given a laptop the other day that had xp on it and I decided to do a fresh install of xp to put it in a charity raffle. Now I am pretty good with hardware/software and build my own systems. Anyway the load of XP SP3 went ok until it rebooted where it hung on the windows XP screen with the blue bar. I started it in safe mode and it booted OK so restarted and the same happened.
The laptop is a Gericom N34AS1 and I have loaded the latest bios. I then tried booting in safe mode with networking and it hung. This told me that the issue was probably a network driver issue. Back into safemode to check device manager and the only ? was against audio and VGA so loaded the drivers for that in safe mode. Still same.
Checked the event logs in safe mode and got this...
event ID 7026 source service control Manager saying the following boot start or system start drivers failed to load.....
    afd
    fips
    intelppm
    ipsec
    mrxsmb
    netbios
    netbt
    rdbss
    tcpip

The mobo is a sis so I tried other sis network drivers but still the same. This was a working xp machine. I then decided to try another image still the same. Tried linux distro wont even start to load and eventually tried win 98se. Hey it loaded and the network worked so I knew my hardware was fine. Did an upgrade to XP and it fails. I also noticed that this lappie had win 2000 on it originally so loaded that and it works.

The only difference I can see in device manager from the win 98 and win 2000 is that they just have the sis 900 pci fast ethernet adapter. On XP it has these as well...
    Direct Parallel
    Infrared Port
Sis 900 based PCI fast ethernet card
    wan miniport (IP)
    wan Miniport (IP) -Packet Scheduler
    Wan Miniport (L2TP)
    Wan Miniport (PPPOE)
    Wan Miniport (PPTP)

Never had a system beat me before and been working on this for nearly a week, I am like a dog with a bone I would love to sort this. The problem I have is when you boot normally it just freezes so I cant see what is causing it but it really points to a driver. Any help appreciated guys. Again sorry about the long rant

    Steve

Is this still the same system you had problems with a few weeks ago? If so, you are certainly very persistent!

Have you tried any boot diagnose tools, like msconfig, described here 112.196.12.196

    hi Pwilliner,
yep still at it. I tried msconfig and also a program called autoruns which looks at all the processes and driver loads. I disabled as much as I could but still hangs. Autoruns looks a good tool but fumbling with it really as I am at the cusp of my knowledge

I think you need to find and install the motherboard drivers. Probably the things giving you the problems are chipset.
    Code:
    http://www.driveridentifier.com/scan/download.php?item_id=120297660&scanid=78AFC54743EA48E0B855C5E64BA92ADF&hardware_id=PCI\VEN_1039%26DEV_6325%26SUBSYS_51001584
Is the board a Sis 650?

hi plodr, yes its a sis 650 I have already installed the network andvga and audio drivers for the mobo. Are you saying there are generic chipset drivers as well? I dont see them on that link it only refers to graphics less I am missing summat. cheers

plodr these are the drivers I am using....

    Audio... C-Media 22/06/2006 vers 5.12.1.51
    VGA.... SiS 650_651_M650_M652_740 04/07/2006 vers 3.74.2.0
network... Sis 900 PCI fast ethernet adapter 22/02/2006 vers 2.0.1039.1190

Plus lots of wan miniport microsoft drivers but no sis for them anyway.

Have tried different boot options using msconfig but no joy. There was a process for checking the Ntntlog.txt in windows to see whats happening at boot time but this gets overwritten and as I cant get the system up other than plain safe mode it tells me that lots of drivers didn't load which is what I expect as they dont in safe mode so catch 22. I am positive its a driver problem but I need to be able to trap the data on a "failed" bootup so I can see it. The event log tells me that the network drivers failed to load but is quite vague. I am going to try earlier sis 900 network drivers and see what that does onwards and hopefully upwards

    Yes.

I googled for SiS 650 and here are a few sites Be Careful if you decide to download from any of those sites, scan the downloads with your security programs. I weeded out some that looked suspect to me.
    http://drivers.downloadroute.com/tag/sis_650_chipset/ (3rd link down mentions Sis 650)
    Does Gigabyte service SiS?

You might want to post what you need in the drivers section of the forum. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23
You'll get better help than I can provide.

    Hi Plodr,
I have researched those sites and they dont have a generic chipset driver when you drill down they talk about individual agp vga etc. even on the sis website they only have the individual drivers and no chipset drivers so am a bit confused now. I know some mobos have a base set of drivers to support the north/southbridge chips etc then individual device drivers but I cant see these anywhere for sis. The strange thing is that it works on win98se and win 2000.

This is a Russian site and most of the forum is in Russian. The first download says it is ALL
    http://drp.su/drivers/notebooks/?v=Gericom&m=N34AS1&id=3601&l=en

Unfortunately you have 2 things working against you:
    a) SiS is out of business
    b) XP did not originally come on that computer

It's too late now but before you wiped the XP install, you should have collected all the non-MS drivers and archived them or made an image of the laptop that you could restore to and grab the drivers before you wiped the system.
