So there's a power cut, I managed to pull power from wall socket before the power came back on again. Boot gets to choice of what type of setting would i like to boot from, Cannot Safe Mode or last Known Working Configuration boot so I reset CMOS and has made no diff at all. If I choose safe mode the periphrial drivers load and it then goes no further. If I choose Last Known etc. I get the XP boot screen and bar for 5 seconds and then blue screen for a multi second and round we go again.. Any ideas Geeks as i am at a loss... ?????

I know how you feel, :( its either corrupted the data or fried something HD works so I would say either modem or soundcard so try unplugging them.

Just realised you have a raid that really complicates things especially if your os is on them.

Hi Rikky ... I doubt if anything got fried as I unplugged before the electric came back on thus preventing a surge .. could it be the MBR has got scrambled and can I FDisk and dlete and restore the Primary Dos partition from floppy. and would that fix MBR ???

I believe MBR = Master Boot Record. Can you try repairing your installation by inserting your win xp disc?? I don't know if that would even help, but it's an idea eh??

What threw me was the windows screen loaded and as far as I know the MBR has already handed things over to the OS so the corruption will in the windows files, like the man said try repairing it with the windows disk other than that it could be when a faulty peice of hardware is rattled by its drivers, although it was a power cut there could have been a surge that caused the cut. :D

How right you are Rikky , of course if boot gets that far it is a XP boot prob... yesterday I had several attempts at fixing by trying to 'Repair' OS but all it wanted to do was format, so I ran a 'chkdsk' from the dos prompt on CD and doom and gloom prevails.. message : ''the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoveral problems' so with that info I tried to put plan 'B' into operation. Went and bought another 80 Gig Eide HD and loaded OS onto there then connected the SATA Raid / Stripe to see if at least I could recover data. but no... Sata showing in Bios and on boot but not when loaded, I have a tremendous amount of data i would obviously like to retrieve.. barring data rescue software(that will be the last ditch attempt on retrieval) is there any way i can get the com to recognise SATA.. there are NO jumpers on Western Digital HD's (sata), I went to Bios and set first boot to Eide (new OS) and that loaded OK but SATA not showing . Just out of interest I changed at one time to 'Add In' and it booted from the SATA . so computer willing to co-operate there ... any ideas Major Geeks... :)

Just as an added interest, if XP has a 'Repair' facility and i assume it formats what is required and then rewrites, how come that wont work .. ie. Why call it 'Repair' ???

Latest... Sata Raid/Stripe 2 x 120 Gig are 'Seagate Barracuda's not W.Digital. Ran a disk diagnostic prog and have the following reports..

    PARTITION CYLINDER SIZE
    ---------- ------------ ----
    # Type Start End MB
    PRIMARY
    1 NTFS 0 891 7337

    Diagnostic Results:

    Full Diagnostic Scan Result: Passed

    File Structure Test Result:

Partition 1 (NTFS (7.3 GB) ) Result: Failed with critical Errors

have tried 3 data recovery progs but they cannot find the Sata drives. with regard to the Partition 1 (NTFS (7.3 GB) ) info I had not partitioned as both drives are all one partition.. any specialised Geeks there to assist me further ...??? :)
