Major Geek backup not working

I signed up for Major Geek backup some 6 months ago and it has been working well doing a daily backup of my files, documents, and programs and sending me an email confirming it each day. Yesterday when I shut my PC down for the night I noticed the backup was still running at 9pm after starting at 5:30pm and I had to close it down. Well today again it started as scheduled and ran for over an hour without doing anything. I cancelled the backup today but I need to know why it is not working. I defragged my registry two days ago using Gary utilities and did a scan using Malwarebytes. Could this have caused the problem. Thanks. Using XP home on a hp pavilion 552w. Have Windows 8.
