Major Help w/ Sony Laptop - Restarting Issues

hello to all....been awhile

i have a sony laptop - pcg-tr3a; it has been great, but recently have had a big problem - i cannot fully restart it (or even shut it down for that matter). i put XP Media center edition 2005 on it, so i could link it up with my xbox 360. was working fine for 2+ months. i then attempted to install my palm treo 650 onto the pc....went through setup and asked to restart (and then the problem started)....

when i try to restart, it doesn't "hang" like common problem with xp....it saves my settings, shuts down, and then sits there.....monitor is black, hdd usually still spinning, and green power light stays on - i have to hold the power button down for a few seconds to power off completely; THEN i cannot turn back on for a minute or so (as if it is trying to charge or something) and then it powers up normal.

The same thing happens for shutting it down

It also had some problems keeping time - so i replaced the CMOS battery, thinking that was the problem, but still an issue.

i have reloaded my entire OS AGAIN....wanting to see if it was an OS issue....but the problem is still happening.

i have installed no other programs since the new OS - so no software issue is possible. i am getting very desperate for a solution and would grealty appreciate any help/tips to help me achieve one...Thanks

already tried that...HDD status: ok

i have been attempting to fix this problem for a week now....any other suggestions?

 

The only other thing i can think of, right click my computer/ properties/ hardware/device manager/ double click anything on that list,go to resouces and at the bottom it will list conflicts if any. ed

 

nope...no conflicts....

i tried event log - event 7035, 7036, 6005, 6009, and 6006 are all that show up.....?....

 

Have you tried uninstalling palm treo 650 and see if that helps? and also have you tried another restore date, like go back to before you installed that program? ed

 

i formatted the drive and reinstalled the entire OS again.....is it possible it caused hardware problems?....or a registry tweek that i need to change back?...

 

Sorry, its been so long since i read the first post i forgot you reformatted, dont know about wmc, possibly a bios update? Have you updated since you changed operating system? There is one other thing that is in my thoughts, possibly failing power supply. ed

 

i have the most recent bios version....how do i check a failing power supply on a laptop?

 

Have you tried running it on just the battery? ed

 

yep....on the battery....off the battery...

*when i leave it off and plugged in for an hour or so, i can restart 2-3 times....the 4th time the problem happens again*

 

That dont sound right, a laptop dont charge the battery when it is turned off, possibly having time to cool down? Try setting something like a deck of cards under the rear of the laptop so more air can enter the fans,[look under the rear and dont block the intake]. And dont set it on the bed or anywhere air cant get in. ed

 

One more thing to check before i go night night, go to start/control panel/power optitions/and see where it is set, if on portable laptop, change to home/office desk. See if it picks up speed. ed
