Major Infection (No programs, or folders will run, pc won't do anything)

One of my friends opened an email saying it's from UPS and he's got tracking number for delivery, like the idiot he is he saved the file and opened it, which was a bad move as it was a virus and it's infected the system badly.

I have the PC here, and it will not run any programs at all, it won't even load the system tools such as system restore, or even task manager, loading anything and it says it's infected.

The weird thing is this software has come up called system tools (Is this a windows thing? because I have never seen it) and it scans for malware finds stuff but will not remove anything as when you click remove again windows comes up with file infected. I think this system tools thing is part of the virus? As it's like it's controlling the system, but you cannot do anything to remove it.

So I cannot give you any logs or anything as the machine will not load anything. It's loaded up into windows but that's all it will do, load up onto the desktop and you can look in folders also, but it won't load anything.

I won't plug the machine into the net either as he has his passwords saved, and some very secret ones which someone could use to scam him...

    What to do ?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Sorry for new post, just can't edit my previous one.

I have managed to get it to boot into safe mode, as it would not boot into safe mode before. I'll try run some logs for you in safe mode, I have spotted something with a weird name in ccleaner on start up which is probably one of the malware issue's.

Okay after deleting the weird looking file on start up in ccleaner, turning uac off, installing stuff on safemode, and then rebooting; windows booted up fine and no sign of the malware stopping everything from running.

Everything runs fine now and I got all the logs I could so you can look at them and give me advise in how to remove the malware from the system for good.

Again deeply sorry for another post, I cannot edit my posts on this forum after a certain amount of time.

*You need to run MSconfig and put your PC into normal startup mode as requested in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME guide.

Use MSconfig to setup for Normal Startup Mode

Also, move ComboFix.exe directly to your desktop as instructed in our guide. It is currently here:
*Questions: I see a reference to AVG10 - is this the protection program you plan to use after we've finished the cleaning? Why didn't you install and run SUPERAntiSpyware?

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features if using Vista or Windows 7) for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Step 2:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 3:
Please download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
    • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
    • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123tdk.com).
    • Click the Start Scan button.
    • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
    • Do not use the computer during the scan
    • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.4.17_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. This log will be included in the new MGlogs.zip asked for below.

    Step 4:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 5:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 6:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

Thanks for the reply and help.

I was a bit busy but we had a problem. I told him not to do anything on the pc while I was not with him, so what does he do, do a system restore. I come back and see it back to it's original state.

But I managed to get it back to how It was after I went into safe mode, and have done everything you have asked, the system is running fine now, but am not sure if it's fully clean yet.

    Logs are attached.

{sigh}Yes - that, and other things too; like uninstalling one of the tools that we will suggest that he keeps, and installing Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC.

    Step 1:
Now we need to use ComboFix again.

NOTE: If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion"... the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Step 2:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 3:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 4:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    Ok -

Items marked for deletion accomplished, but you didn't answer this:
*EDIT: We don't recommend using any of the Uniblue software - it doesn't help that much and frequently can lead to more problems.... Uninstall Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC now using "Programs and Features " since this is a Windows 7 machine!

    Sorry!

I tried uninstalling that a few times but it keeps giving me an error and I can't find it in hijackthis, any tips for removal?

The system seems to be running okay now, can't really say any malware issue based on performance now as it's ok, my only question is what's the IWON Service?

IWON is an online gaming website. WOT (Web Of Trust) doesn't give it a flattering rating. I've read numerous posts questioning whether or not it's a scam - enough to advise "If in doubt, avoid it!".

Please post in our Software Forum for any help using special un-installers such as the below:

    Revo Uninstaller 1.91

    Your Uninstaller! 2010 7.3.2010.33

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
