Hi all, first post from a newbie so forgive me if I leave soething out / waffle unnecessarily.
I've just started at uni, and I bought an Acer Aspire 5672WLMi (specs if needed?)

It was a very fast, capably machine and could run top-notch games at a very high quality (i.e Doom3 at top specs).
It ran perfectly for about 1 month.

I decided that I wanted some more desk space in my flat, so I ditched the TV and brought a "Freecom DVB" USB TV card from my uni shop - £31, bargain.
TV quality was great, as was the recording etc, until chortly after (like, 1-2 hrs) everything locked up and I got the blue screen of death "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".
Rebooted and it took 3 hrs over 3 disk checks and was back and running again.

10 minutes later the same thing happeded, but with a different message, "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT".
I had a look around on the internet when it eventually started running (but very slowly and only for about 1 hr at a time) and it seemed to suggest poorly installed drivers (which I put down to the TV card) or corrupt RAM hardware.

After attempting driver upgrades/downgrades/reinstalls for the TV card I phoned Acer, and was advised to reinstall the OS from a hidden partition.
I did this, but it STILL blued out and crashed.
I then did a full reformat with Partition magic (and changed the drive partition sizes whilst I was at it) and reinstalled again.
This time I ran various diagnostic tools before installing anything.
RAM tests came back negative for damage, Registry recovery tools came up with 120 faults and fixed them, and both virus (AVG and Norton) and Spyware (Spybot) came back negative for viruses/spyware.

It then ran fine for about 2 days, except that it wouldn't recognise the in-built webcam, or even aknowlage it was connected. Also USB devices that I used regularly without problem before the reinstall, would now not be recognized / come up as faulty. only certain devices will work on certain ports (although this could be partly to do with the crap USB hub I have).

Then yesterday the final blow came, when both video and sound became stuttery whilst playing LAN warcraft3, and then it blue screened again.
It's now very slow and reluctant, and according to task manager I'm only using 250-550MB of my 2GB of ram.
The page file is set between 3-4GB.

There are 70 running processes, but I googled them all and none are malicious, just various printer drivers and Acer installed system tools.

Sorry for the long post, but someone please help - I'm at my wits end.
I could send it back to Acer under warrantee but I'd rather do it myself so that it's not gone away for a month or however long it'll take them, as this is my one and only computer!
Also they want £38 if it's a software fault and I'm a poor student!

    Regards
    Tom.

You have a mess is what you have, two anti virus's is a no no, 70 processes? Thats crazy, You probally dont need 20. I believe you have a crap load of driver issues, Im not a gamer so im not sure, but i dought any pc could game with all them processes running, I would start over again and only install what you really need, and sort out the right drivers, if you need help finding the right drivers, let us know. Almost forgot, well i did really, WELCOME TO MAJOR GEEKS. ed

I echo tunered ....wipe it all ...reinstall fresh ....one av program ....get your updates done (sp/2) then see how stable it is ...if you want to game ...here is a profile you can load:
    Gaming profile:

    http://forums.guide2games.org/index.php?showtopic=2716

ok, here's how you make a gaming profile...now...it can be somewhat hard but don't be intimidated...

go to control pannel user accounts...now create one called gaming...CONGRATES!!! you've made a "gaming" profile...

now that your in that profile, take out the background and put a boring solid blue one that they have in there...right click on my computer, choose advanced>visual effects and then click on adjust for best performance.

take away all of the apps taht shouldn't be running...
and here's some other slightly more advanced tips..

    To increase system performance

Right click my computer. Click properties.
    Click advanced.
    Click settings (under performance).
    Click Adjust for best performance.
Scroll to the bottom and check the last one “use visual styles on windows and buttons”.

How to disable XP's -crud- built in CD Burner

    Click the start button.
    Select Run.
    Type services.msc and click ok.
Go to IMAPI CD-Burning Com Services open it and click on start up type, change to "Disabled".

These Settings will fine tune your systems memory

You need at least 256MB of ram to do this:

Go to start\run\regedit -and then to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

1.DisablePagingExecutive -double click it and in the decimal put a 1 - this allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive yeilds faster performance.

2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 -this allows XP Kernal to Run in memory and improves system performance a lot.

3.Create a new dword and name it IOPageLockLimit - double click it and set the value in hex - 4000 if you have 128MB of ram or set it to 10000 if you have 256MB set it to 40000 if you have more than 512MB of ram -this tweak will speed up your disckcache.

    Reboot

Unable to delete from Avi files from HD

XP holds files in it's memory even after you have closed the application using them making it impossible to delete them from your harddrive. To fix this:

    Start -> Run -> Regedit
Find the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler\ directory and delete the "DEFAULT" key.

    Tweak The Swap File

For Users with 256 MB RAM or more this tweak will boost their Windows- and Game-Performance.
What it does: It tells Windows not to use any Swap File until there is really no more free RAM left.

Open the System Configuration Utility by typing msconfig.exe in the RUN command. There in your System.ini you have to add "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" under the 386enh section.

Restart your Windows and enjoy better Game performance

    Disable Services

XP Pro runs a lot of services by default that are pointless if your not on a corporate network, the following services are ones that I safely disable thereby freeing up memory but check what each one does first to make sure your not using it for something:

Go to Run and type services.msc, right click on each service, properties and choose disable.

    Speed Up The File System

NTFS is a great file system, but its feature-set comes at a slight cost in performance. You can negate this a little with the following tips:

    * By default NTFS will automatically update timestamps whenever a directory is traversed. This isn't a necessary feature, and it slows down large volumes. Disable it by going to Run and type regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem and set 'DisableNTFSLastAccessUpdate' to 1.

    * NTFS uses disparate master file control tables to store filesystem information about your drives. Over time these core MFT files grow and become fragmented, slowing down all accesses to the drive. By setting aside a little space, MFT's can grow without becoming fragmented.

In the same key where you disabled the last access feature creat a new DWORD value called 'NtfsMftZoneReservation' and set it to 2.

    Disable DLL Caching

Windows Explorer caches DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) in memory for a period of time after the application using them has been closed. This can be an inefficient use of memory.

    1. Find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer].

    2. Create a new DWORD sub-key named 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and set the default value to equal '1' to disable Windows caching the DLL in memory.

    3. Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

    Tweak The Prefetch

    1. Run "Regedit"
    2. Goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher]

    3. Set the value to either 0-Disable, 1-App launch prefetch, 2-Boot Prefetch, 3-Both ("3" is recommended).

    4. Reboot.

It will decrease the boot time but double and increase the performance of your XP.

SpeedUp Your Connection By 20% (Cable Users Only)

    1.Log on as "Administrator".
    2. Run - gpedit.msc
    3. Expand the "Local Computer Policy" branch.
    4. Then expand the "Administrative Templates" branch.
    5. Expand the "Network" branch.
    6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left pane.
    7. In the right window pane double-click the "Limit Reservable Bandwidth" setting.
    8. On the settings tab check the "Enabled" item.
    9. Change "Bandwidth limit %" to read 0.
    10. Then go to your Network connections Start=>Control Panel>Network & Internet connections>Network Connections and right-click on your connection. Then under the General or the Networking tab, (where it lists your protocols) make sure QoS packet scheduler is enabled.

It may take effect immediately on some systems. To be sure, just re-boot.

Wow Tim - that's a lot of info! I'll look into setting up a gaming proflile when it's sorted.

I'm not running 2 AV's, sorry for the confusion. I ran the Norton AV that was pre-installed, then as I didn't want to pay subscription I uninstalled it and ran AVG.

I checked every single process on a google search - they were all Acer tools processes and printer drivers etc. I swear that it had all of these before the trouble started, and it ran high-end games on the standard "one fits all" profile I had. NONE are malicious. At least 55 of the processes run before I touch the system at all.

Now the bad bit: As the company that supplied the laptop carried out a pre-delivery check on it, I can't burn back-up disks, so I have to use the hidden partition. This installs all the acer programs and devices automatically as part of the OS, so I can't get rid of them. Even if I did have back-up disks, the Acer files would stil install.

The copy of XP home installed is new, so SP2 is aready present.

Umm.. that's all I can think of.

    SO:
Should I reinstall windows (again... sigh) and then uninstall all the acer things? Trouble is I quite like them all, they are useful and supposedly make the system run faster.

Under standard conditions (with 70 processes) the processer is less than 5% loaded, and the memory use is 500MB of 2GB, so there's plenty of reserves. Eve if I tab out in the middle of a game the RAM isn't even nearly all implimented.

Here's a screen grab of my processes:

Best way to do this is thru trial and error ....disconnect everything except the hard drive and one stick of ram (unplug cd/dvd drives, all pci cards - use the onboard video ...) boot up and see how it runs ...dependant on that, swap ram and see how it runs ...then if all runs well ...put all ram back in and see what happens ....if all well, start putting in drives and pci devices one at a time until it faults ...

Well call me stupid ....too much going on ....it's a laptop ....disregard the previous post ....have you run memtest? Oh yeah ...you did ....arrrgghh ...run an online scan like bitdefender?

OK, having done a complete reinstall, the Acer set-up thing installs the graphics card etc for you, and it's own optimising and security stuff "Acer Empowering Technology".

On a completely base system now (yes, I'm even using I.E to browse!) there are 62 processes.
My question is: How do I end a process permanently, and stop it coming up when I reboot windies?

Okay, I've done all the things suggested and I'm down to about 45 processes. Still a lot, not nowhere near as many.
I've done most of the tweaks suggested for the gaming partiton.

Is there a way I can disable processes (suck as bluetooth etc) for one user (gaming) but not the other?
