a friend brought his PC to me said he uninstalled avg free 8 to upgrade to ver 9 but cant get it to install as it continually re-boots.

I tried starting in safe mode and running read and run me first but superantispyware won't install, as windows installer won't run in safe mode.

    Malawarebytes ran but found nothing.

combofix seemed to run ok deleted a few things so i tried rebooting normally but back into reboot cycle.

currently its running in safe mode and running norton's online scanner. any idea's what next move is?

    Thanks

Ahhh but you said you were unable to complete anything in the R&R, yet...

So you ARE able to run some programs, and you did not even mention MGTools.exe. I would like to see a log from running MBAM regardless of whether it found anything or not. I would like to see the combofix log and I also need to see the C:\MGlogs.zip from running MGTools.exe. Post these into your next reply please. :)

    Hi

thanks for your input below are the log files you asked for.

I had thought(following negative scans that it was just a corrupt windows installation) and so ran a system restore to the day before issues arose. But as that didn't work i re-ran scans that i could toady (mbam combofix rootrepeal mglogs) hope this hasn't F**Ked the clean up. Sorry.

I know i should have followed the read & run me to the letter (won't do it again)

System will still only boot in safe mode normal mode as soon as any user logs on it reboots after about 30 seconds.

still couldn't get superantispyware to install

    Thanks

Well malware is not the cause of your problems anyway, so that's that ruled out. You should visit the software forum for further advice on the issues that remain now, however, we can do this:

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
You said your friend thought he had uninstalled avg 8.5 however it is still very much showing in the logs as being in the add/remove programs listing. Tell him to check again, uninstall via this method > then if you have problems, to disable the AV, then run this tool:

    The Official AVG Removal Tool

    • Make sure you also delete any AVG folders in Program Files and Documents & Settings/Application Data directories.
    • Now Run Ccleaner.
    • You should now restart your system and, re attempt installation of avg9.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
