While trying to clean up some spyware it seems that some Windows XP files are now either missing or corrupted??

Starting after system was started (in error) in diagnostic mode....then somehow almost all 'services' were disabled, but we were not aware until we ran into a problem trying to 'uninstall' Norton Internet Security 2005. Uninstall would not complete, because of "disabled" services.

Long story short, we can no longer reinstall or uninstall Norton....can't do any search, (when you type Start: Search, the next screen is blank).
Cannot load or do a System Restore, the program never opens.

    and on and on.....

What can we do to fix whatever has gone wrong with Windows!

Many thanks.....I'm lost to figure this out!!

Go to start, click Run, type cmd. Type sfc/scannow. Have your windows XP CD at the ready. :)

What is this going to do? I have a Dell Reinstallation Windows XP CD, and I tried to repair using it, But it gets an error due to the fact that the CD is for original XP, not XP SP2.

This will scan your operating system files and replace any that are missing or modified. It is not a repair installation.

    Ran the sfc/scan now...

Message came up at the end saying:

Files are the required for Windows have been replace by "unrecognized" files...etc.

Then asked to insert our Windows XP SP2 cd (we installed the only Windows XP CD we have (which is the original Dell CD, but it won't work because it wants SP2 CD, which we don't have...we've updated to SP2 through Windows Updates).

    Hum? Now what to do???

thats wierd because I am running SP2 and I can use my SP1 disc for this.

Well... that REALLY helped.. seriously... I need help, not someone trying to say that what I did should work, when it clearly didnt.

No need for the sarcasm. Often times something that works for the majority of users will not work in isolated cases so logically speaking it 'should' have worked. Prophets21 statement about it being weird is perfectly understandable and acceptable..I have to agree with him..it is rather perplexing.

It is 'possible' that it didn't work for you because you don't have a standard XP disc but rather a recovery type disc from Dell. If that is the case, please just be patient as I'm sure with the vast knowledge base here at MG someone will be able to get you moving in the right direction.

One thing I noticed in your reply quoted above is that the command is wrong. Is that how you typed it? It should be "sfc /scannow" minus the quotes. Try copy pasting this in the run command and try it again ---> sfc /scannow

Either way I typed it, It did its little scan, then asked to enter the CD. I enter the Operating system - Reinstallation CD - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition - Dell, and it says I entered the wrong CD.

NIS could have damaged Windows Script. Try using the tool in the link below to remove NIS 2005.

    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4749

That should get it off your system. Now try reinstalling Windows Script and see if that resolves the other issues, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en Save it, close IE, and then install it.

Note: To prevent any applications running in the background that can interfere with the install you can boot to Safe Mode and install it from there.

    Good Morning and Great News!

I have been trying to help my son to fix this problem and his Spyware problems for days.

After removing NIS with the tool, as recommended and then installed the Miscrosoft Script in Safe Mode, Windows seems to be back to normal.

Now I just have to go back into the Spyware forums and work on finally getting the spyware off his system.

Some of the tools wouldn't work and I was getting scripiting error type messages, so I'm sure things will work must better now.

Please excuse my son's impatience last night....he's frustrated with working on this for so many days now...I'm hoping I can finish up for him today and then his iPod will be working fine for Christmas.

Our special thanks to you all and our wishes for a Very Merry Christmas!
If I have any problems, I may be back....but thinking all is good in Windows!

    Thank you again,
    Lisa

    Hey Alex's Mom,

Frustrated, trying to fix a computer, who ever heard of such a thing? :)

I hope you guy's get the Spyware thing fixed, they are very good over there if you need assistance or advice. I don't know what the plans are now for an Anti-Virus and Firewall but we have several available here at MG's that are free and just as good, if not better than the Norton products. Let us know if you need help.

I would certainly follow-up on Adrynalyne's advice, he is one of our experts.

Alex is a lucky young man with a very kind mom. New Ipod for Xmas, whoohoo! :D

    Merry Christmas,

    Steve

    Great news its fixed.
I came into this late, but contact Dell and see if you can wiggle a XP home cd from them.
My son had an issue with his Moms Dell and the recovery cd that was shipped with it would not work. My original (stand alone) did. He went after Dell and kept insisting and they finally shipped one to him.
They told him if it was in warranty, they could. But it was about 3 years old.
He kept insisting and stating when he recovered, he did not want to reload all programs that were 3 years old. Finally after talking to a supervisor, he got the CD.

    Good luck
