My little sister decided to download the nifty little program featured here called RegScrub. Of course, RegScrub identifies what it thinks are problems in the system and "fixes" them. You can also access RegScrub to restore anything that was messed up.

Here's my problem. She clicked "fix all problems" and of course, the program "fixed" all the problems. I go and start up the system today, and I can't access any programs (all broken shortcuts), I can't access RegScrub to restore everything, nor can I access anything on the Control menu. All I can access is the internet and music files. I can't view any images, Javascript isn't running, nothing is working. I can't even edit the registry.

What do I do!? Please help.

System restore might not be necesary yet.

you probably can't run regscrub because the shortcut is brocken right?

Just navigate to the folder it installed to and run the program directly and see if you can restore the backups from there.

I just ran the installer for you and the default installation path is C:\Program Files\RegScrubXP

try typing the following in the Run box from the start menu and hitting enter.

That happened to my xp sp3. I dunno maybe it's new. I screwed up my registry a couple times, I couldn't no longer log on, I restarted xp a few times & it corrected itself. Something about rolling back to the last known good registry. btw, I disabled sys. restore.

Try booting xp, tab F8 key for safe mode, log in there, restore your registry by running the program, reboot. Then uninstall that program. I use only "easy cleaner". Google it.

EasyCleaner is available from Major Geeks. ;)
Search for programs in MG, in the first instance, and you will find http://www.majorgeeks.com/download414.html

Sorry. Not SP3. Just part of Windows updates. There are some SP3 updates in there.

Still doesn't work. RegScrub of course, is an exe file, and the system won't allow me to open the exe files at all. I'll have to go through Command prompt to do it, something I'm not a particular fan of.

Hey no worries, I managed to get it fixed. I just went into Tools > Folder Options and created a new .exe extension. Then I restarted in Safe Mode, accessed RegScrub's install application and restored the backups. Thank god I managed to get it fixed. I need to murder my little sister now.

Do you mean your exe was missing from the list of file extensions?
