Majorgeeks...gods of all that is computers...HELP!!!

cant get the compaq 2100 laptop to boot, its three lights for caps num lock and the third one come on...cd drive starts to spin and then it shuts down...I had a pointer hijacker or something the would not let me point at times and the system became more unreliable...and after using a registry cleaner and buying Norton system works , it still had issues..I'm a broke flight instructor who needs the files off of it to bill my clients...so data is irreplaceable..I KNOW back up's are always good..PLEASE HELP!!!

 

If the data is so crucial, perhaps your best bet is to take the hard drive out, and backpack it onto another computer.

Is this a viable option?

Attempting to get the machine to boot is repairing Windows or some hardware problem, which would be a secondary priority, IMO. I would make saving the data top of my list.

 

can I piggy back a laptop hard drive to a desk top? and how would I get it out no an engineer and not skilled in computer laptop opening or closing of the case

 

Sometimes, yes. Depends on the interface the drive uses. Hopefully, it is a common one. It LOOKS like an IDE drive to me, which is a good thing, but I can't be sure from these simple drawings.

See this link to the service manual for your lappy. This has instructions on removing the hard drive. All it takes is a couple of screws to be removed.

also the drive and I/o lights up front ARE NOT coming on...HELP!!!
