I've only been on this forum for a couple of weeks now but have found some really interesting reading and subjects from people getting pc's fixed in various ways to the men and women argueing over politic's and the UK the US and the other countries all dicussing the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
But the one question i would really like to ask, is, how most of the Majors whether malware, software, or hardware fixers or even admin geeks, would really like to answer some of the questions with a humorous view to things
i:e like the other day i seen a Q posted saying " i can't switch on my pc can you help " and what came to mind ( with humour ) was answering with " maybe because your pc is in the diner and your sat in the lounge " :-D
Or even what do you think have been some of the stupidest questions you've been asked { and no smarmy comments about this one either } and how you would have liked to answer them ?
P.S it goes without saying don't mention any names !!!!! :)

    Hi

For me if the thread is in the lounge its fair game to silly replies, but in the actual tech forum areas, its a bit of an un-written rule not to make fun of other users, as some folk just dont know about tech and we have always taken the stance not to insult or make light of their knowledge or lack of it, unlike some forums who flame and riddicule new members.

This is one of the reasons that we have a wide membership from young to old, with varying degrees of knowledge, they can post what to some are daft questions but to them its not, which is why you may just see humourous none technical answers disapear from a thread as we like to keep the quality of technical posts at its high standard its at now.

But yes many a time I have had hand in head, thinking only if my funny witty side was to come out, I think one the the best threads I ever read was one intitled "i cant find the multiplier" I was in tears, some classic line in that thread but to bare in mind it was 5yrs ago and members in it are older and wiser now *I think* ;)

While I was at Kodak, some bright spark had wrote the manual to using the new fangled 486DX PCs and added the immortal line of "To turn the PC on press the red button on the front" little did he know what issues that brought to the support desk and me, as only 20% of PCs we bought had a red button on the front, so many a call the the support desk where, I dont have a red button"

I havent seen too many "common sense" or Google-able questions here really. MGs is here to help people that dont know much about what to look for even if they did google their problem. Halo covered that in his post. But working in IT support, a guy hears quite a bit. Obviously i cant say, "dont bother me just google it and leave me alone". Although id sometimes like to, id probably get fired if i did.

I think i told this one here before.
I work at a smaller college, and had a girl call me down to the class room she was in with a problem with her laptop not being able to print to my domain networked printers. I get down there and she actually unplugged the cat5 from the network printer and plug it into her computer.
Well first i tried to explain that since her laptop wasnt on the network(domain...) she wouldnt be able to use the network resources like printers. Also, since she unplugged the network cable from the network printer, it would prevent her from printing to it. I then asked her to not unplug things anymore... She really didnt get it.

I mean its stuff like that that really makes me want to get out of simple user support. I admin the network too, servers and stuff, but those pretty much run themselves. I dont really have to do too many technical things with the servers or anything on a normal day.

Aah, still had to flip the PSU power switch in the back then eh? Those inline ECO's were a bitch:-D

Agreed with Halo as I am wont to have some fun too. I think it was my second post here, a first time poster asked about a word processing program and I quipped for him to get a spell checker first to be understood. MA was not pleased to say the least but he thankfully didn't ban me.:) I have always remembered that post and conduct myself appropriately now. ;) Can you imagine how you would feel getting an answer like that being brand new? Hmm, cross MG off the list.:boxing:***

RE to Halo's post - it's why I only stay in the Lounge and Mac forums. Because the Mac guys have a sense of humour :p

And the Lounge I can just be my sarcastic self :p

Reminds me of a time that I went out on a service call to diagnose why a customer's computer would not turn on.

When I got there, I pressed the power button on the computer and it turned on. She was all like, "What did you just do?"

Considering she had owned the computer for a couple of weeks at this point, I asked her how she had been doing this previously. Turns out that she was using the power strip to turn it off and on. Apparently when she would turn on the power strip, the computer would just start on it's own. This time it didn't automatically for some reason.

I can't really think of funnier things than I encounter in real life.

MAC folk need a sense of humour, especially when it comes to repair bills! ;)
