I have been asked by an attorney if we can make a copy of a hard drive and make sure that its contents are not disturbed, especially file dates. So how can I make a cloned hard drive read only?

    Thanks!

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, mont1228.

The procedure would depend upon which operating system you're using, but I imagine the easiest method would be to restrict the drive's permissions to Read-Only for all limited users. The only users who would be able to change the permissions would be those with passworded Admin accounts.

Of course, that's only going to work with an operating system under your control - it would not prevent someone from mounting the drive with another OS. From what I understand there are programs that may boot-lock the drive, and some drive manufacturers offer hardware and drive controller locks, but I'm not familiar with them. Sorry. :-o

This is a new application that will suit your purpose on the cloned drive it will hide and protect the files

    Lock files, Lock folders:

The locked files/folders are protected from accessing, users can not open, read, modify, move, delete, copy, rename the protected files/folders. Files and sub-folders in a locked folder are also protected.

seagate has a back up utility called magicdisc
with that utility you can make a copy of a hard drive and above all
you can load the image as a virtual hard drive. and it has a read only feature when you load that image. but that software is for seagate disc only.
if you do not have seagate then you can look for acronis software.
after all the seagate software was madde by acronis.
i wish this was helpfull enought.

Very interesting. I had a lawyer want to know if they could save all the facebook messages to a CD.

there is a way to save a Facebook chat.
Just click on it, then press Ctrl+A to select all the text
then press Ctrl+C to copy the text you selected
It will copy everything on the entire page.

go to Word or other text application
    hit Ctrl+V

Then save it as a file.
