Making a computer run better

Hello. This is my first time here. As you can tell from the extremely technical subject description, I don't know very much about computers (yet). My computer runs ridiculously slow. I have been told that there are ways to clean it and/or update it. Does anyone know how to do this (without cost). Thank you.

Hi Nancy

A few things we really need to know are your system specs and which OS ( windows version you are using ) as this will aid in giving you the correct info on how to speed your system up?

A few quickies tho

1. Defrag your hard drive/drives
2. Run your Anti Virus program
3. Use a Anti Apyware program ( Ad Aware or Spybot S&D )
4. Check to see how many programs are in your system tray ( if their are alot running in the background your PC will slow down )
5. Update OS with patches or fixes
6. Update hardware drivers.

but if you give us your system specs and OS version all of us here can taylor our answers to your specific system
