Making internet go faster?

Unfortuntly I have dial up, i notice that there are internet download things that can make it go "faster" - do they work?

 

If you "Dial in" with a Regular Dial Up Modem you will get what ever your modem can do. I.e. 53Kb/sec. Max. (b=bit)

That means if your TCP/IP is optimized when you download a file you should get 53000 / 8 = 6.6KB/sec. (B=Byte).

So as far as download files are concerned 6.6KB/sec. is best and nothing currently can change it since it is an analog transmission and telephone Line related issue.

The services that claim “Give us your Good money and we will make your Dialup almost like DSL” do versions of the following.

You connect through their Proxy server to the Internet using your DialUp connection. They follow you Surfing habits and cache places that you are logging frequently to. If these places have pages that are not changed frequently you get the page from the service's Proxy cache, and not from the actual site. Doing so save some time and makes it feel like you Connection is faster. So few pages might appear faster on you screen and thus the Marketing department of the service can avoid legal trouble, but the actual DialUp connection is Not even 1 b/sec. Faster.

There are some ways that some isps make your surfing faster even though they can't actually speed up your connection. Here's a couple of them.

They have you install their software that has:

1. "Look ahead" dowloading. You visit a page and while you read it, the software downloads and stores (caches) the pages that are linked to on that page in case you click a link. Then the page you click may come up fast from your own HDD.

2. Its own caching server on your own machine. Even after you leave a site by closing you browser, the source code files are still in your temp internet folder. Any time you are online, it will read those files and download the links to you cache.

Also many of those isps promising faster surfing strip the graphics automatically as they pass through their server. Images on a web page load much faster because the resolution (quality) was reduced and so was the file size.
