Malware? 3 out of four programs wouldn't run.

I followed the READ & RUN ME FIRST, but only MGtools.exe would run -- the other three had various failures of one sort or another.

    I have attached MGlogs.zip.

    1. When I tried to run SAS, I got the following message:

"SuperAntiSpyware Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

When given the option to send Microsoft an error report, I chose "Don't Send."

    2. I changed the name of mbam-setup.exe to mb, but it didn't finish the install. It got hung up at the very end. I tried to install it a second time, but it got hung up at the very beginning. Then I tried to uninstall it by clicking on unins000.exe from the program files folder where it was installed, but that got hung up as well.

    3. Combofix simply would not run. I first disabled my antivirus software (NOD32) and Windows Firewall.

The problem I'm having is that whenever I am on a network other than my work network (e.g. if I am at home or using a free WiFi network), and if I have Excel open, then Excel operates super slowly and sometimes crashes the computer.

I also find that it takes a lot longer to load webpages than it used to.

I also recently had someone use my credit card to purchase e-giftcards.

Let me know what I can do.

    Thanks,
    dan

I changed the name of SuperAntiSpyware.exe to SuperAS.exe and was able to run it.

I changed the name of mbam.exe to mbAntiMal.exe, and it ran.

These two were able to clear off some malware.

Then I ran combofix.exe. At first I changed it's name to Tricky.exe, but it told me I couldn't do that, so I changed it back to combofix.exe, and that worked.

I've posted the three new logs to this message.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Uninstall the below software:
    LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec PIF AlertEng] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exe" /a /m "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\AlertEng.dll"
    O15 - Trusted Zone: www.download.com

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Local Settings\Temp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I got an error when I tried to uninstall LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec), but I can't remember exactly what the error message was because my notes got deleted when ComboFix was running. But it is no longer in my Add/Remove programs.

The O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec PIF AlertEng] entry was not there when I ran HijackThis. Perhaps it got uninstalled with the Add/Remove of LiveUpdate?

I did everything else. There seemed to be a little problem when the computer restarted, because my virus software turned on again. I don't know whether that interfered with MGTools. I got the following logs in my NOD32 log:

Time Module Object Name Threat Action User Information
3/18/2009 14:13:31 PM AMON file C:\MGtools\Process.exe Win32/PrcView application error while cleaning - operation unavailable for this type of object DAN-NOTEBOOK\Dan Event occurred at an attempt to access the file by the application: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe.

I'm still having problems with Excel not working and bogging down my system when I am using a network other than my work network. I don't know if this is malware related, but it just started a couple months ago. I had similar behavior when I had Google Calendar Sync installed on my machine, but I uninstalled that many months ago, and the problem went away.

Most likely not related. You would have to post about this in the Software Forum but I'm not sure you would be able to get help unless your provide alot more details.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
