    Hello,

I have been trying for over a week now to remove malware (and it seems everything else) from my mothers PC. It is so bad that it has disable everything such as the taskmanager, getting to the registry, and the CD drive. Also, I cannot get to a website. When I try, it just redirects my browser. I have finally decided to just wipe the hard drive and start over.

    My question:
My mother is 78 years of age. Although she is still an active lady, she is not computer literate. What antivirus/malware can I install for her that will pretty much keep her system up to date without any input from her.

    Thanks,
    WandaLL

You should have come here sooner as we could have helped you with the removal.

However: you should work thru the below link:
How to Protect yourself from malware!

No anti-virus will protect 100% ..it has a lot to do with your surfing habits and downloads / attachments. You might want to set her up with a restricted account that does not have permissions to install things.

I did read and print the malware article, probably too late, but it is the best thing I've found/read in a long time. From the software listed, I just wasn't sure what would be best for my mother. She does not download anything. The only thing she does usually is to go to yahoo to read her email.

I do have a nephew who uses her PC a lot. He is an adult and he surfs on the web quite a bit. He is also computer iliterate.

While I was waiting on a reply, I continued searching the net and found a little program that I was able to put on diskette, "AutoRuns for Windows v9.21". The malware didn't stop this program from running and it allowed me to remove the bad stuff. I focused on the items that did not have a signature and deleted what I knew was malware. I checked the net for the ones I wasn't sure about and found which ones were good and which ones were bad. After that, everything was good (so far).

I just installed ZoneAlarm since that is what I purchased about a week ago. Is there anything else I should use with it? If so, what would you suggest/recommend.

    Thanks,
    Wanda

SpyBot does a good job with immunizations....and again you might consider setting up a separate account for the nephew. Not knowing what you have installed makes it hard to guess what you might also consider. :)

Thank you, I did have Spy Bot on her PC for awhile but it got corrupted some way. I did like it so I'll add it back.
