I have been watching the following malware link for the humor. I am trying to decide if the poster is paranoid or yanking someone's chain. What do you think, prankster or paranoid? I am leaning toward prankster as (s)he does not take the time to listen, follow instructions, or answer questions.

Happens sometimes, we just take everyone at face value and try as best to assist, who knows if its a prank or not, but we can just answer the questions until a solution is found.

Some are not adept or worldly in PC things, so the text may come out different and seem a prank, but to the original poster its very serious.. we have to I guess give benefit of doubt in all cases.

Thats not the worst one I've seen in not being able to follow instructions.. their have been some corkers in the past,

I do say, that was entertaining.

Though, if that was minor, I'd love to read, some of the others. :)

Heh, well, here's something to think about.

In one of my lines of work, I often get "mystery shoppers".

For those not familiar with the term, they are people who pretend to be people who want to buy a product from you store, and test your ability to please customers. Usually the mystery shopper will write a report hilighting points that they found useful from the targetted staff.

What if you Major Geeks was being mystery shopped - without your knowlege. For example, some website wanted to do a review of how various different websites dealed with questions about malware.

Normally the people being MS'd will know that in advance - obviously not by who or when, otherwise they'd give the game away - but they will know it's going to happen. But since this is the Internet, anything could happen.

Something to think about, eh? :)

sounds real to me. the instructions are more difficult to follow when you dont understand what you are doing. also i would think that they feel that the 'read this first' doesn't apply to personal malice, just the net kind. (did that make sense?) can you give him/her 'start all over again' instructions? maybe find out what sort of router it is and go through the steps to protect it? a lot of instructions to these equipments are in badly translated chinese, and if you dont already understand what it does and how it does it than its not possible to follow. just my 2cents, but my instincts say this is real and obviously distressing. massive amounts of aloha :)

Hate to admit to it, but I saw that thread when it was started and ran away screaming. I haven't been up to taking on threads lately, burnt out, especially another one like that.

Kudo's to Charlie, I don't know how he can do it. Day after day, week after week. He's phenomenal. Everybody should be seeing more of me in the coming days.

Back to the OP, real or not, they think it is real; and in a state of panic because of it. Obviously there is some bad blood with his/her neighbor and I can understand, kind of, the paranoia. It may take 64 posts to get the info, but Charlie will get it.

I think a thread like this could only originate in the U.S.. It's hard to consider all the problems as coming from a neighbor when the poster has chosen the user name, AK47, and talks about his/her tires having been slashed from the inside. Much of what the poster is talking about is mental illness, either of the poster or of the neighbor, and I wonder where you draw the line between a technical forum and a mental illness forum.

On the other hand, I'd never heard of the two malwares, HaxDoor and SearchCentrix, so there seems to always be something to be gleaned from a thread.

Chas has much patience and will get to the root of the problem be it real or fake in time, I've known a thread and SPD will remember this one, hit around 64 posts before the issue was understood and the guide steps followed and malware extinguished.

What a terrific response Halo! ;)

One of the reasons that I really enjoy this forum so much is that Major Geeks "takes all comers" so to speak; whether they are more experienced computer users or a newbie - and the fact that everyone is given the "benefit of the doubt" as you put it. So many other computer forums on the web are not like this - wherein the oversight is less qualified and/or patient with people who may be frustrated or confused when something goes on the blink.

There is not an experienced or new user out there who has not been in this situation - where they are enduring some type of problem with their computer and they apparently "just don't get it," even though the potential answer may be "as plain as day" to see by others viewing or posting on that thread. In the end, patience usually wins out in such cases, at least in my experiance.

    Good Luck!

Actually the read 'n' run me first guide is a little extended. Check this guy's response (post 3). But since those logs help chaslang to get the malware off our back all we can do is to provide them;) .

The Read and Run Me guide is on purpose extended like that to cover as many bases as possible, the generic steps while may not fully remove all malware, they will get the PC to a known point, in which the logs will help to locate and remove the rest, with the input from the malware geeks.

While it looks long the guide is mostly text to aid the less experienced pc user, novice if you wish, so they generally need some extra pointers on how to use the apps and scans and some notes on errors and messages so that they dont get flustered or panic'd.
