Hi:I have gone through the windows XP cleaning procedures and I still have the malware problem.
The problem began two days ago but I'm not sure exactly what I was doing at the time. We were searching holiday options on-line and following a lot of links.

The original threat was a security warning saying that "worm.win32.NetBooster" was infecting my computer. I was directed to a wed site to download a fix.

I then downloaded Malwarebytes AntiMalware and ran a scan. It removed several files and things seemed okay for awhile except that my desktop background is always white no matter what background I choose.

A few hours latter the security warnings began again.

Since completing the Windows XP Cleaning as directed, the warning have restarted but are different. Right now I'm looking at a pop-up red framed window titled "Security System Warning". the following:
    "Alert details"
    File:
    C:\WINDOWS\wml.exe
    Threat
    Abebot
Possible Spyware infection has been detected on your computer by "Security System"

To remove detected threat you need to update your PC-Antispyware protection.
Click here to visit PC-Antispyware web site

    At the end it says:
Update PC-Antispyware protection and remove detected threats.

I also keep getting small pop-up warnings with a yellow triangle at the bottom right corner of my screen.

I've tried to attach the asked for logs. I hope I got it right.
    Thanks for your help

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

Hi: Thanks a lot for your help. I didn't think I'd get through it all but I did.

I'm not sure how to tell if the "fixME.reg" notepad file actually merged with the registry. When I doulbe clicked it, it opened but nothing else seemed to happen.

Also, there was no 04-HKLM\..Policies\Explorer\Run........ item in the HJT log. The others were there and were fixed.

    Everything else went okay.

Right now there are no more problems except my desktop background is white and I can't seem to change it. Before the infection I changed it often. If that is my only problem, I'm happy.

Thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Requested logs attached.

A few things didn't go bye bye. Let's do some more:

Right click your desktop / properties / desktop / customize desktop / web ...make sure there are no web pages listed or checked and that "lock desktop items is not checked.

Please make sure ALL of your anti-virus and spyware programs are disabled while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Thanks a lot TimW. All seems normal right now. I have attached the requested logs.
I'll let you know how it's going in a few days.

Currently I use Norton for security. Would you suggest any changes or additions to security to avoid this kind of thing in the future?

    Thanks again.

There is still one little nasty that refuses to die.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

I'm not sure if this is related to it, but find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\simply90.ini

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Hi TimW: Thanks again for keeping at this. Much appreciated!

The fixME.reg file I've been saving to the desktop then opening as directed. There is no indication that the file is merging anywhere when I do this?

I have attached the requested log file.

    Thanks loads.

Your logs look good.....one more thing and we are done:
Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    2.
    * Click START then RUN
    * Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
    * Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    5. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
