Malware Issue - Play Sushi

I was trying to install a software for a new printer for my wife's business when I noticed the computer running slow.

I ran SpyBot and found some unwanted program called Play Sushi. I also ran HiJackThis but didn't find anything unusual running.

When I ran SpyBot, my AntiVir found a couple of viruses.

I ended up on this site and started walking through the Windows XP cleaning procedure.

When I got to the step where you are supposed to install the Download Tools, my PC would only let the SAS program download, install, and run.
I was able to download and install MalwareBytes AntiMalware, however, it will not run when launched.

When I try to download MGtools and even rename something beside MG, it doesn't even download. The file is showing 0 K in size.

The only new program I installed in the last 2-3 days is Skype.

Since I was not able to attach the logs of the preferred programs, I've attached the AntiVir log, the SAS log and a HiJack this Log.

    thanks,
    Tim

Try booting into safe mode with networking. Then see if you can download MGTools. You can try renaming it to 123.exe or 123.com. Same with MBAM, try renaming it.

    TimW,

Went into Safe Mode with Netwrking

Got MGTools to run. Have attached log files.
MWB still would not run. Again, was able to install it, but when try to run, it tries for a couple of seconds and program never launches.

interesting thing... did a search on Malwarebytes start in Safe Mode in Firefox using google. Brought up search results, but then the page redirected to some advertisement.

It is a very bad idea to allow all users to have Admin. privileges. You should change all the kids accounts to limited.

Do you know what this is:
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\Q93cE93.sys

    If not, rename it to:
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\Q93cE93.sys.old.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.

    • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
    • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
    • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
    • Click the Start Scan button.
    • Do not use the computer during the scan
    • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
    • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_14.17.05_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory ( usually Local Disk C ).
    • Attach this log to your next message

I ran TDSSKiller and have attached the log.
Also, tried on a whim to run MWB and it ran! Cleaned and have attached log.

Thanks for the advice. When I went into Control Panel/User Accounts to change, it didn't show any accounts listed. Hmmm
My kids are older, 18, 15, 12, but think this virus started on the 12 year old's account.

I did not know what the below file was, so changed as requested.

Good, that found what may be the main cause of your issues. Now, I suggest that you try to run both SAS and MBAM on each user account. Attach any logs that show infections being removed and name them so that I will know which account they come from.

Once you have done that, run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    TimW,

Whew! that took a while. I've attached what had infected files in two posts.

The computer is doing much better.

I still doing see the ability to Modify the Users in Windows, but may try to do it in Safe Mode tonight.

Also, noticed AntiVir was not starting up in all sessions.

    Am correcting that.

    thanks,
    Tim

Looks good. You may need to disable WinPatrol in order to change user accounts.

What issues are you still having, if any?

    TimW,

All seems to be well!! thanks SO much!

The only issue now is that I still can't view the User Accounts even after stopping WinPatrol.
I'm looking on the support.microsoft website for answers and have also posted a request.

If ideas, please let me know.

and thanks SOOOO Much for the help earlier.

Good to know. If you have tried to change them in safe mode without success, you may wish to post in the software forum for your issues with the user accounts.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
