Yesterday my daughters XP computer wouldn't boot, so I booted into safe mode and ran AVG and found a few virii. I was able 'remove' them and then boot normally and ran through the Malware Removal Steps and still have things 'popping up' on my daughter's computer.

    She was infected with: Trojan Generic11.nxn, Trojan Generic12.ajrv (2 files), Trojan Clicker.vse, Adware Vundo Variant and Variant/Rel, Rootkit.Agent/Gen-Seneka, Rootkit.Seneka-trace, Trojan.Vundo-Variant/Packed-Gen & Small-Gen, and Smitgraud-C

When she tried her computer again toda, AVG went nuts an some of the Virii were back. I ran everything a second time and and am now posting the log files in hope that somebody might be able to see where these problems are coming from.

Please let me know if there is anything that can be done. I will post the MGlogs.zip in a second posting.

Thank you in advance for the help!

First I would suggest that you set up a user account for your child and make it a limited account.

    Now:
Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the "Input script here:"
    part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

Thank you for the assistance. I ran through the steps and have attached the files. I would love to take our advice about making my daughter use a limited account, but she is 18 and would probably shoot me if I did that. Instead I have shown you where Major Geeks is located, so she can do this next time.

I will run AGV and such and will post any positive results that occur.

    Thank you again!

Sweet....your logs are clean. And I do understand about the "child"....got one a few years older myself. :) ...no wait...:(

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks for all of the help. Everything is running great now... Now I just need to teach my daughter where NOT to go, :)

Also, I an considering buying SuperAntiSpyware, for some active monitoring, do you all have any opinions on what to invest in?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

I for one do not believe in purchasing AV software. I am online for 8 - 10 hours a day and have never been infected for a number of years now.

Having a good freeware AV ( Avira, Avast, AVG, etc.) and a good spyware active program plus the SAS and MBAM as backup scanners ...........that should be sufficient. The danger is in ones surfing habits and clicking on things one shouldn't.
