I was noticing various pop-ups, toolbars and such on this laptop but I didn't know how they got there. I asked a friend of mine to take a look at it and he got online and downloaded Malwarebytes. When he ran a quick scan, 844 instances were listed. He didn't clean out anything but told me to sign up on Majorgeeks and go through the read and run me process. So, here I am and I hope I followed all the instructions correctly. I've never done anything like this before but my friend said I needed to learn some things about malware and how better to protect my computer.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium. It's 32bit and has Service Pack 2. It also has 3.0gb of memory (RAM). I only have 2 administrative user accounts and I notice this stuff in both accounts, if that makes any difference.

Your logs are clean. What malware issues are you having, if any?

Well right now, everything looks pretty good and is running smoothly. I have norton 360 and it kept popping up saying something about detecting malware or a virus or something. My chrome browser was acting weird like it wasn't running the way it normally did. But, since I ran malwarebytes and rebooted, I noticed right away things looked and acted the way they used to. While I was downloading and setting up running those other scans, I haven't had any isssues with chrome and no pop-ups from norton. Are you saying my computer is clean now?

Yes, MBAM did the trick for you.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

OK, I did everything you listed and reset the restore point. Everything is running real fast now. I've read some of the information about how to protect yourself and I had no idea how bad malware was. Thanks TimW for checking things out, my friend was right, you guys are the best! I have lots more to read!!!
