I was checking out some flash/java games online the other night and ended up with some kind of malware. I don't recall which game I clicked on when it happened but it affected my browsers right away. I was operating on chrome at the time and a page came up saying, aw snap, can't display the page. I have had issues with all my browsers getting online ever since. I have run the run me first scans and the logs are attached. Rootrepeal ended up in a physical memory dump each time and I couldn't run it.

Other programs would run and then disappear (like textedit). The process would still be running but the application would not be present.

Thank you for all your help.

Based on these logs, it does not appear that you are having malware problems. However since ComboFix is back online now, please run it per the instructions in the READ & RUN ME and attach the log.

Also do you know what the below file is for/from? It is new.
    Code:
    "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\"
    dn4853r.sys Dec 14 2009 82432 "DN4853R.sys"
Also did you allow MGtools to finish running? Did you see the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and did you click the Accept button twice ( yes twice ) to accept?

Sorry it has taken so long to reply, I have been travelling. I don't know what dn4853r.sys is for, but I just looked in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ folder and is no longer there. I have attached the combofix log. MGtools keeps locking up when checking my systems data so I ran the analyse.exe as an administrator and have attached the hijackthis log and the new MGtools log.

After I posted the first time, I ran a-squared and it found several trojans, but I don't know how to post the log file (db3 file) or even if it will help they have been quarantined but I am still having problems.

Note that the msinfo32.exe program (SysInfo) takes a long time to run on Vista. Also it could help to make sure AVG ( a resource hog ) and Windows Defender are shutdown before running any scans.

Yes ComboFix confirmed my suspicion and remove the driver, but the file is still there according to the logs you just attached. Thus you are not looking in the correct place or it is hidden from you.

Most likely not of any use since it has too many false positives and much of what it detected my have been things we installed. Also there log file are of no use in that format. Logs that are useful to everyone should be text files.

Exactly what problems are you still having. Other than that one driver I suspected and ComboFix removed, your logs are clean. However let's remove the associated file and do some other misc cleanup.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 10
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Ok, things appear to be running fine now, thanks. Programs are no longer closing themselves out and all 3 browsers are working again (IE, Firefox, and Chrome). I have followed all of your instructions below and attached the logs. In addition, I have removed AVG and loaded Comodo. I have also deactivated the Vista firewall and am only using the Comodo firewall. Does the HopSurf program offer any additional protection?

I looked for the dn4853r.sys again and I know that I am looking in the right place and all hidden and system files are showing. Is there another way to hide files in Vista?

Thanks again for all you do and the service provided by MajorGeeks.com

Evaluate it yourself and see if you like it or not. For me, I would remove it and their Ask Toolbar too.

It was already removed by ComboFix awhile back so you would not see it anyway even if you could. However, you have to realize that just because you enable viewing of hidden files and folders, it does not mean you will see all files. This is how malware hides. It is a major security hole in Windows that allows malware creators to come up with dozens of ways to hide from you if Windows is running. Rootkits are one of the most well know ways of hiding.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
