I've followed the Malware Removal steps, and now I have the logs available. I'd appreciate any help in getting rid of any bugs I have. I should point out that Norton is on the system but disabled, AVG is my current antivirus scanning tool.

Panda identified Spywarequake and Securityerror and some other stuff.

    Thanks in for your help

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Run the below procedure and attach the requested smitfiles.txt log.

    SpywareQuake & SpyFalcon Removal Procedure

You ignored step 3 of the READ ME. Uninstall ALL but one antivirus application. Then attach a new HijackThis log.

Thanks for the help! I removed Norton through Add / Remove procedure, although how good that is remains to be seen - the directory is still there, probably losts of other crud too.

Registry fix seemed to go fine. There were no nasty .dll files to rename and delete from that list.

I rand SmitRem from a user account with Administrator priv and the file associated with that is smitfiles1.txt. Smitfiles.txt resulted from the second run using the actual Administrator account (not sure if this was necessary or not).

    I deleted the following files:
    system32\autodisc32.dll
    system32\dcomcfg.exe
    system32\stdole3.tlb

I have yet to see any more indications of spyware, BUT how do I know for sure - start from the top again?

    Thank you

OOPS - spoke too soon, as I was attaching the txt files, a browser opened to a site - cannot actually see the url, but the title says cannis(dot)org and looks like a Canadian immegration site, so I'm not done yet!

Neither of those logs you attached from SmitRem are complete logs! In fact it looks like you just split one complete log into two parts.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpE211.tmp
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yrp] C:\Documents and Settings\Ivana\Application Data\??crosoft.NET\mmc.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmfu32 - winmfu32.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
    :
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ivana\Application Data\??crosoft.NET <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\1024 <--- the whole folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Security Troubleshooting.url
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\appmagr.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxole32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpE211.tmp
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST)
    .

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I don't know what happened wrt the previous logs that look like they were split. I certainly didn't split them. I checked the hidden files settings and they were as outlined in the turorial, but I made sure by applying to all folders. On to the results:

These were fixed by HiJack This or deleted as directed:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yrp] C:\Documents and Settings\Ivana\Application Data\??crosoft.NET\mmc.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmfu32 - winmfu32.dll (file missing)
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ivana\Application Data\??crosoft.NET <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\appmagr.dll

These were not to be found:
    O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpE211.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\1024 <--- the whole folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Security Troubleshooting.url
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxole32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpE211.tmp

Upon initial boot, computer (Toshiba Laptop with XP home) stopped with a blue screen (background colour) . Cntl Alt Del had no effect. After a cold start it came up with an Applicaton Error MSASCui.exe
    - the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000034). Click OK to terminate. I was relieved to find this was Windows Defender after a search on Google. Things seem to be much better, hopefully it stands the test of time. Thanks for the help, I'm so glad to have found this site!

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

If Windows Defender continues to cause you problems, uninstall it.

Thank you so much! All seems ok, I've tightened up as suggested. The net would be a much better place without this stuff.

I'll be here lurking and learning
