    I'll start with the general things. I'm running Windows XP SP3 (on an ancient Dell tower) and Windows Vista Home edition on a Gateway laptop. I believe both are infected. My primary browser is Firefox 3.6. This browser has also started to hang recently, staying open after I have closed it (I found that this could be caused by an add-on called Cooliris; I removed Cooliris but the problem persists).

    I first noticed the problem when I received an e-mail from my ISP saying that an ungodly amount of spam was coming from my desktop (which it was, as evidenced by avast!). Ran avast, two trojans removed.

    Then the browser hijacks started. Maybe one in every ten Google search link I clicked would redirect my browser to a site called partydeals.com or somesuch. With that also came the popups, which avast! on-access classified as downloader sites, and broke the connections to them.

    I have run HijackThis, am currently running SUPERAntiSpyware. I previously tried to run Malwarebytes, but I get a shortcut error every time the program installs, saying that the shortcut desination was moved or deleted. I can't open the gui.exe or the mbam.exe file. I have done pre-boot scans with avast! and SpyBot SD to no avail. Please halp.

    Let's start with doing this:

    download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now copy just the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Since I cleaned my system with the original tools that the forum offered me, things have been running a lot faster. However, I'm still getting annoying popups.

    This entire operation went smoothly; just like the directions. Didn't have any problems, but even as I type this post, as if to taunt me from some malware graveyard, I'm getting popups. Frustration abounds.

    Hello :) If I may chime in here a moment... can I ask why you didn't ever run combofix? Was it because it was offline at the time due to a bug?

    It is available once again and I would like for you to run it please.
    and run it as per these instructions.

    Combofix

    A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix

    Attach the C:\combofix.txt log into your next reply if you were indeed successful in running it.

    Thanks
    Kes13!

    Originally I didn't run ComboFix because of the giant, imposing red lettering under the ComboFix title, saying not to run it. Then again, giant imposing red lettering on the internet has taught me to run away instead of actually read.

    And wow, ComboFix is a little frightening.

    LOL

    Reviewing your log now. Please do the below considering that CF has been run:

    Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    1. Please go to Add and Remove programs and uninstall the following software:
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17
    • WinPcap 4.0 beta 2 <--- uninstall this if you did not knowingly install it yourself.

    2. I see this in your logs:

    Does it relate to Virtual Truck? What do you know about it?

    3. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    gAGP440p
    Viewpoint Manager Service

    File::
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\fikitiku.dll
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\kobisena.dll
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\wokirowu.dll
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\zefagawi.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\zipekupu
    c:\docume~1\ORMSBY~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\gAGP440p.sys

    Folder::
    c:\program files\Viewpoint

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    5. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    6. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions.

    7. And also let us know how things are running now! :)

    Ever since I ran ComboFix everything has been running a lot smoother- system performance is up and CPU usage dropped a ton.

    Virtual Truck was put on a CD by my broadband provider as an installation program. Completely useless, but I haven't been able to get rid of the annoying warning box saying that it can't find the CD. Mostly because it never bothered me too much.

    Log flies!

    OK things are looking good, however combofix is reporting a possible MBR infection, (which may be a false indication) but let's do this: (we will also deal with Virtual Truck so you no longer receive the error)

    • O4 - Global Startup: VTAgentReboot.exe

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix again
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Fcopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ReinstallBackups\0013\DriverFiles\i386\atapi.sys | C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\atapi.sys
    C:\I386\iaStor.sys | C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\iaStor.sys

    File::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\VTAgentReboot.exe

    Registry::
    [-HKLM\~\startupfolder\C:^Documents and Settings^All Users^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^VTAgentReboot.exe]

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Trying to search for anything on Google is pointless- all browser redirects. And I'm fairly certain that in the HJT log, at least four new redirects have been inserted. Process went smoothly, though!

    Leave the reading of the logs to experts. ;) There is nothing wrong with your HJT log.

    Please go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Not to be rude, but I don't think you need to be an expert to do a little bit of reading. I haven't been doing anything additional to my computer but what I've been told to in these forums, but I have been checking my computer for what I've now come to refer to as "unintentional updates". I thought I was supposed to be keeping the people helping me up to date with how my computer is running, and there are definitely four new entries in the HJT log that point to browser hijacks:

    I came to this forum for your gracious help, but could do without the condescension.

    TDSSKiller log attached.

    I'm sorry if you took things the wrong way. It was not meant to be condescending. There was a wink in there too.

    You said browser hijacks. O17 lines are not browser hijacks. They are related to Domain Name Servers ( DNS) which is sometimes used for DNS hijacking not browser hijacking. However to you, the end user, you may think the effect is a browser hijack.

    There is only one new line which is the below one:
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{1C5C6018-E436-42E7-AF22-1E524E953BBC}: NameServer = 193.104.110.38,4.2.2.1,209.18.47.61 209.18.47.62 192.168.1.1 209.18.47.61 209.18.47.62

    The other 3 lines were there since you came here. Most of the IP address in all of these lines are for your ISP (Road Runner). In this new line there are only 5 unique IP address for DNS servers:
    4.2.2.1 => Level 3 Communications one of the largest communications and Internet backbones in the world
    209.18.47.61 => Road Runner your ISP
    209.18.47.62 => Road Runner your ISP
    192.168.1.1 => Your home network. Probably your router.
    193.104.110.38 => Software Service Prague s.r.o.

    At first I thought that the last DNS entry was just part of your network either at home or work, but since it appears to be for a service in Prague, that would likley be an incorrect assessment. Also since the TDSSkiller log came up clean, it would seem that you are not suffering from browser hijacks as I was reading in your thread. You may be suffering from a DNS hijacking. Sometimes DNS type hijackers will even corrupt the DNS feature of your router which would require a reset to factory settings to recover.

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{1C5C6018-E436-42E7-AF22-1E524E953BBC}: NameServer = 193.104.110.38,4.2.2.1,209.18.47.61 209.18.47.62 192.168.1.1 209.18.47.61 209.18.47.62

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Then immediately reboot your PC.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    By the way, if you need WinPcap which you have installed, you will need to reinstall it after we finish all of your cleanup. ComboFix broke it. WinPcap can be used for malicious purposes and some tools like ComboFix will thus remove it.
