    Hello. I am following the malware removal guide. My control panel will not open, so I was unable to search the programs listed in the removal guide. I continued on and got to the cleaning procedure. In the cleaning procedure it says not to continue if I can't disable the user account control which I can't disable through control panel. Is there another way to disable UAC other than control panel in vista, or am I stuck? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Other methods if that fails you.

    Good morning!

    I started having noticeable problems maybe a month ago. My browser was being redirected and a notification was popping up of a threat. I ran AVG and it vaulted a Trojan. Everything was okay for a little while, and then I noticed that my browser was being redirected again. AVG ran a scheduled scan that night and couldn't finish because it went to "blue screen."

    I work at home from my computer, and the day before yesterday my work program (ChartNet) would not work because it said it needed a recognized printer and I did not have one. Well, I do have a printer; it was not showing up at all in control panel, printers. So, I reinstalled the printer drivers and that fixed the printer problem.

    I then came here which, i might add, was not easy; it really did not want me to get onto your site. I followed the Malware Removal Guide. In step 3, House Cleaning, I found that I was unable to open control panel which I had been able to do just hours before; so, I had to bypass the Add/Remove programs instructions.

    I went on from there and got stuck again at step 5, Uninstall Known Malware, again, because I could not get to Add/Remove programs. I then moved on to the Vista Cleaning Procedure and had trouble disabling user account. I posted and received the above message. I followed the instructions above and it worked. I was able to download all but one of the tools; I was unable to download Malwarebytes.

    I moved on and as per Vista cleaning procedure, I ran SuperAntiSpyware. After I ran this I was able to open control panel, so I went into Add/Remove programs and checked for all of the programs listed in previous steps and did not find any. I was also able to download Malwarebytes.

    Step 3: Installing tools and running: I was unable to run Malwarebytes and RootRepeal. The RootRepeal had an error message. I wrote it down if you need it. I was able to install and run scans with the other tools.

    My computer is running Vista (32-bit). I have attached my logs. No logs for Malwarebytes or RootRepeal.

    Thank you very much for any help you can give me! Also, thank you to the above poster for answering question.

    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 <--- Uninstall this outdated version of Java.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{06A548B7-25F0-416E-88AB-A8F6C4DE325C}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408}]
    RegLock::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\AllUserSettings]
    @Denied: (A) (Users)
    @Denied: (A) (Everyone)
    @Allowed: (B 1 2 3 4 5) (S-1-5-20)
    "BlindDial"=dword:00000000

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6
    Try again now.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Do the redirects persist? (You had a DNS infection)

    I uninstalled the Java version on my computer and ran MGtools/analyse.exe as you instructed. I then ran ComboFix. After ComboFix ran and my computer rebooted, I could not get on the internet. I also was unable to install the Java version you instructed me to install (downloaded to a flash drive from another computer). I was unable to run Malwarebytes or MGtools/GetLogs.bat.

    The internet, Java installation, Malwarebyes, and MGtools/GetLogs.bat all would not run, giving essentially the same error message for all of them. The error message reads, "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." This is new. I have always been able to get on the internet; it was just being redirected.

    You asked if I am still having trouble with redirecting. I have not been redirected since I did the clean. My computer started running very slowly a couple of hours after, though.

    Thanks!

    Reboot the machine, This should solve the error you are getting. ;)

    Then try and run the Getlogs.bat.

    What errors are you having when trying to run Malware Bytes?

    I rebooted and it did solve the error.

    I ran the Getlogs.bat and attached the log.

    I was getting the same error for MalwareBytes, "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." After rebooting the computer, I was able to run MalwareBytes and have attached the log for that as well.

    Open up Malware Bytes > locate the update tab > let it update > re-scan > fix anything it may find.

    Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thank you for all of your help. I was away for the weekend, and when I got back last night I updated and ran MalwareBytes and CC cleaner as you instructed. I did not have any problems after running these, so I did the "final steps."

    Now, I am having problems again. When I click on Firefox to bring it up, it takes forever for Firefox to come up. Also, I am having problems with my work program, Chartnet. I don't know if it is related, but one of the error messages reads: WSPELL.OXC: Register of ActiveX program "WSPELL.OCX" failed. Error code=5. The other error messages read: mtvclient.exe has stopped working and mtplay.exe has stopped working.

    Should I start from scratch and do all of the things in the Read Me again?

    Thanks again.

    Hi. I ended up wiping my hard drive, and I'm not having any problems now. Actually, my computer seems to be running much smoother overall.
